Amazon Extends Monthly Prime Option to Cash-Strapped Students

Amazon is targeting a new segment of shoppers - teenagers.

For Amazon, getting teens to shop now could turn them into customers for the rest of their lives, said Brendan Witcher, an e-commerce industry analyst at Forrester.

"As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need". Children can access digital content that their parent allows on their child's device but are not enabled to shop. The teen can also add a note to their parents.

And parents can add their minor children as authorized users of their credit cards or co-sign credit card applications for their college-aged kids, allowing them to spend their money online.

Capturing teen customers might be more hard than previously imagined.

Order approvals are switched on by default, so if a parent wants to allow a teen to shop Amazon without each item being reviewed they'll have to explicitly disable this feature. "I think this is the direction a lot of these companies are going in just to help parents and teens stay more connected in a safe way".
