Equifax takes down web page after new security scare

According to reports, credit monitoring company Equifax has been the victim of another hack just one month after revealing 143 million Americans may have had their personal information stolen.

"We are aware of the situation identified on the Equifax.com website in the credit report assistance link", the Equifax spokesman told Mic. As Ars Technica reports, the issue was brought to light by security analyst Randy Abrams, who discovered that the site's redirects eventually pushed a download that has been flagged for both adware and malware.

Equifax - whose multimillionaire CEO made a decision to set sail from the company weeks after the announcement that, under his watch, the information of 143 million Americans was obtained by hackers - was sending visitors of its website to the completely bogus software update.

He says that, out of an abundance of caution, that Equifax has taken the affected page off-line, and is looking into the matter. Abrams determined that when those updates were clicked, adware would infect a visitor's computer.

While Equifax continues to deal with the fallout of the massive data breach it announced in September, a security expert is raising fears that the consumer credit rating agency might have another security problem on its hands. The hacked page tended to appear when a user attempted to contest incorrect information on their credit report.

Equifax and the Internal Revenue Service also are facing pressure from lawmakers over a $7.2 million contract that Equifax was awarded, after the breach was made public, for the company to verify taxpayer identities and help prevent fraud.
