GM Idling Detroit-Hamtramck Plant 6 Weeks

New cars are shown for sale at a Chevrolet dealership in National City California U.S

General Motors Co. will idle its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for six weeks later this year to pare inventory before making permanent production cuts because of slowing sales, according to a person familiar with the plan.

The factory, which operates only one shift, builds Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Impala sedans, plus the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid vehicle - all of which have been slow sellers.

"This action will help maintain more stable production", the company said.

That output cut would lead to around 200 lost jobs.

While U.S. sales of the Cadillac CT6 are up 51 percent to 8,128 this year through September, the flagship luxury sedan is a low-volume seller.

In the first nine months of 2017, GM sold 15,634 LaCrosse models, a 21 percent drop from past year.

Across the industry, USA vehicle demand has dropped 11 percent through September and is on track to decline for the fourth consecutive year.

GM declined to comment to the Journal and was not immediately available for comment to CNBC.

GM eliminated a second shift at the plant earlier this year as consumer preferences shift away from sedans and coupes to pickups, crossovers and SUVs.

GM said in a statement that effective October 20 its Detroit-Hamtramck plant "will operate under a reduced production schedule".

GM, like Ford and other automakers, is realigning production as consumer demand shifts markedly from passenger cars to SUVs and trucks.

Production cuts slice into revenue but also could help automakers avoid deeper price cuts on vehicles they can sell.

"While the initial headline interpretation may be negative, we actually view it positively", Citi analyst Itay Michaeli wrote in a note Thursday. This follows the elimination of a full shift, roughly 1,300 autoworkers, earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported Wednesday that GM has warned a striking Canadian labor union that if it doesn't call off a monthlong walkout, the automaker will shift production of the top-selling Chevrolet Equinox SUV to Mexico. Along with that announcement, GM said it planned to layoff around 1,200 employees at the plant.
