New Orleans cop dies in line of duty, mayor says

A New Orleans police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty in East New Orleans overnight, Superintendent of Police Michael Harrison said at a press conference early Friday morning. The officer who was struck was rushed to University Medical Center, where he died.

Harrison said four officers made an observation that caused them to exit the police vehicle when a suspect opened fire, striking the officer several times. Authorities say only one officer was injured and transported to UMC where he later died.

As of 4 a.m., the officer had not been identified.

The shooter peacefully surrendered after negotiations, Harrison said.

"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison said.
