U.S. private sector adds 135000 jobs in September: ADP

Chart USD CNH Update High-wave candle set yesterday eroding upside pressure

This lower total of jobs added is expected to be a direct result of lower hiring due to disruptions caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which impacted Texas and Florida during September.

The monthly Automatic Data Processing Inc report showed the U.S. economy adding 135,000 new jobs in September, down from 237,000 the previous month, although a touch ahead of economist forecasts for 131,000 jobs gains.

In contrast, the hiring by small businesses in the United States actually fell by 7,000 in September, while private sector employment hiring increased by a modest 135,000 jobs.

"In September, small businesses experienced a dip in hiring", said Ahu Yildirmaz, VP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute.

Job gains at that level are enough to cut the unemployment rate over time.

"Extracting from the effects of the storms, which are temporary, the labor market is fine", Zandi said. The gain was close to estimates of economists polled by Econoday, which had forecast a September gain of 140,000 jobs, compared with an original reported increase of 237,000 for August.

Service-providing jobs rose by 88,000, including 51,000 jobs in professional/business services and 29,000 jobs in education/health services. Zandi said last month's strong construction hiring could partly reflect the early stages of rebuilding.

Over at Deutsche Bank, Brett Ryan and Matt Luzzetti see nonfarm payrolls rising by just 50,000, noting that in September 2005 payrolls dropped by 35,000 after Hurricane Katrina, which hit fully two years before the economy started rolling over.
