Sexual Harassment Then And Now — Oliver Interviews Hoffman

Oliver Hoffman’s war of words over sexual harassment claims

During a panel that celebrated the 20th anniversary for the screening of the film, Wag the Dog, the host of the panel, John Oliver, engaged in a heated conversation with Hoffman in regards to the allegation. However, it seems that the actor either did not seem to understand the gravity of the situation or simply chose to remain dismissive of how deeply his actions had impacted a young person who would never be able to escape their consequences because, according to a report by CNN, Hoffman went on to say during the discussion that neither has he ever met Graham Hunt ("if I met her it was in concert with other people") nor does he know who she is.

"First of all, it didn't happen the way she reported", Hoffman replied, before suggesting that the apology he had made in response to the allegations had been misconstrued as an admission of guilt by the press. In a six-minute (edited) video taken by a journalist who was attending the panel discussion, Hoffman is seen asking Oliver if he actually believed "the stuff you're reading" and questioning why Graham Hunter hadn't come forward with her story in over three decades - something that earned him an "Oh, Dustin" and an exasperated sigh from Oliver.

Oliver raised Hoffman's statement that it was "not reflective of who I am".

After a point of time, the actor said, "You weren't there", to which the "Last Week Tonight" host replied, "I'm happy I wasn't". "What response do you want?' - Hoffman 'It doesn't seem self-reflective in the way the situation demands" - Oliver". "If it happened and you've given no evidence to show that it didn't [happen] then there was a period of time for a while when you were a creeper around women.", Oliver stated. But they were sexual in terms of the humor in it.

"Well, there is a point in her not bringing this up for 40 years", Hoffman said of the 32-year-old incident. Then he said, 'I'll have a hard-boiled egg ... and a soft-boiled clitoris.' His entourage burst out laughing. It did not manifestly address another claim, by the writer Wendy Riss Gatsiounis, that Hoffman had propositioned her inappropriately in a pitch meeting in 1991. "The theme of the movie is he became a better man by having been a woman". "That you go by a couple of things you read". Another said, "Thank you for believing women".

Oliver said that he considered not addressing the subject at what was intended as a genial chat but then decided he bore an obligation.

He made the audience in NY see how a powerful man faces questions about such allegations, live. "The easy way is not to bring anything up. Unfortunately that leaves me at home later at night hating myself".

"Am I the powerful man?" "Keep a kind of open mind if you can, John". Dustin Hoffman, 80, is one such man who stands accused of allegedly making inappropriate sexually coloured comments and unwanted advances towards an underage production assistant on the set of his 1985 film.

"You weren't there", Hoffman said to Oliver about the "Salesman" set.
