Barry Bennell trial: Coach 'abused me on way to games'

BBC
ACCUSED Barry Bennell’s trial continues at Liverpool Crown Court

Giving evidence at Liverpool Crown Court, the man said he was scouted by Mr Bennell, now known as Richard Jones, and abused at his home and at Butlins.

It was after seeing this, they were told, that the victim giving evidence chose to come forward to police.

The horror films, Unsworth said, worked for Bennell because "you'd be frightened and probably move up close to him so he could hug you".

He went on to explain how none of the boys who were allegedly being abused by Bennell would talk to each other about their experiences.

Bennell would turn the lights off and play music loudly before carrying out the abuse, he said.

He told how he and other boys would stay at Bennell's house, above a video shop which he owned, where he had two sets of bunk beds and a double bed which he would share with two boys.

He alleged that sexual activity escalated and eventually led to Bennell raping him "about half a dozen times". "We didn't want to spoil our chances. he had a big power hold over us with that, which was pretty horrific".

Bennell is appearing in court via video-link because of illness.

Mr Bennell, 64, denies 48 sex offence charges involving 11 boys.

"I think he [the boy] hit him", he said.

OR forced the Wildcats into 17 turnovers on the day. "The play before halftime, I nearly had an out-of-body experience". It's a cliche sports adage, the team with the best players wins, but that's because it's true for the most part.

Asked why he had not told anyone else, he said: 'One, they wouldn't believe you and two, I'm going to jeopardise where I want to go as a professional footballer'.

There was an "untold rule" between boys not to report abuse, he told the jury.

Mr Unsworth said: "I can recall one time being in a dormitory which was full of bunk beds and somebody waking up with a sheep's or ram's head on their bunk bed or actually in their sleeping bag".

In the interview, Mr Bennell said: "I always tended to aim for the 13-year-olds because that was puberty age and they were becoming a bit more strong-willed and not tied to the apron strings".

After a short recess the jury was shown a television interview in which former footballer Andy Woodward broke his silence about being abused.

"That was his scene, he would try and scare the lads", he told the court.

Being questioned by Eleanor Laws QC, representing Bennell, the victim said he had never discussed claiming monetary compensation, although he had been contacted by a solicitor about a civil claim.

A transcript of a police interview with Mr Bennell in February previous year was read to the court, which included a denial that he had abused Mr Unsworth.

Bennell has admitted seven offences of indecent assault and the court has heard he has previously been convicted in England and America for child sex abuse.
