Ben Stokes charged with affray after incident outside Bristol nightclub

England cricketer Ben Stokes has been charged with affray following a fight in Bristol

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has released a statement on the Bristol incident of Ben Stokes after he was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on Monday.

Stokes and two other men are due to appear before Bristol Magistrates' Court at a date to be fixed.

Should Stokes definitively be ruled out of the tour, it would be a huge blow for England whose chances of defending the Ashes in Australia have already been called into question.

Police say no action has been taken against a 27-year-old man who previously voluntarily attended a police station for interview.

Stokes was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm following the incident in the city on 25 September. Following a review of all the available evidence, the CPS has today authorised the police to charge three men with affray in connection with the incident.

The charge comes after Avon & Somerset Police, who had submitted a file in late November, passed on further material in December.

In December, Stokes was given approval to travel to New Zealand where he played six matches for Canterbury Kings and visited his extended family.

Australia beat England 4-0 in the Ashes.

The show featured performances from Liam, Paloma, Clean Bandit, J Hus and 2018 Critics' Choice victor Jorja Smith. Grime star Stormzy , singer Rag'N'Bone Man and rapper J Hus join her and Sheeran for the best album prize.

"Should the ECB Board receive formal confirmation that Stokes has either been charged or that he will face no charges, they would convene within 48 hours to make a decision on his availability for the team at that stage".

There is also the matter of the IPL auction, which is set to take place on January 27-28 and in which Stokes was previous year picked up as the most expensive overseas signing in the tournament's history.

Stokes' involvement, or otherwise, with England has overshadowed much of the winter.

Ben Stokes' immediate England future is set to be decided after the all-rounder was charged with affray. England subsequently said he would not be considered for selection until investigations were complete.
