Doctor Accused of Having Wife Killed to Protect Drug Empire

Husband of New Jersey radio host charged with her murder

Pack's mother April Kauffman, a popular radio host, was found shot to death in her home in 2012.

A doctor running an illicit opioid trafficking ring from his practice in New Jersey with the help of a motorcycle gang allegedly hired a hitman to murder his wife. Another six people connected to the gang were charged in the drug ring.

Kauffman "was intent to have her killed, as opposed to losing his financial empire", Atlantic County prosecutor Damon Tyner said at a press conference Tuesday.

The Atlantic County prosecutor's office, which investigated the case along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies, said James Kauffman and Augello presided over an illegal opioid network that was run out of Kauffman's office through an alliance with the Pagan Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. No one we spoke with was surprised that the suspect turned out to be her husband, Dr. James Kauffman, but the alleged details left many in the state of disbelief.

In this May 25, 2016, photo, Kim Pack poses with a photo of her late mother, talk-show host April Kauffman, in Linwood, N.J. Pack's stepfather, Dr. James Kauffman, was charged in the murder of her mother April on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018.

Kauffman's attorney, Ed Jacobs, said he had not officially been informed of the charges but said Kauffman has long maintained his innocence.

April Kauffman was shot to death in her bedroom more than five years ago. Mulholland died in 2013.

James Kauffman "solicited" Augello in the summer of 2011 to kill his wife after she threatened to expose her husband's alliance with the Pagans when he objected to a divorce settlement, prosecutors allege. The money was picked up on the day of the murder by Ferdinand Augello's ex-wife, Beverly Augello along with additional scripts.

April was found murdered in the Linwood home she shared with Dr. James Kauffman, 69, in May 2012.

In August, Tyner said that subpoenas issued by the state to the municipalities of Margate, Atlantic City and Ventnor requesting employee health benefits information was partially related to the search of Kauffman's office.

"I have been waiting patiently for justice, and today I was lucky enough to be granted justice", Pack said.

The suspect has continued to stress that he was not involved in his wife' death. "I think it puts the towns head to rest a little bit", said Linda Mullin, of Linwood.

Mike Tyson opens marijuana farm in California
Hickman echoed Wood's sentiments and told The Blast that the "undeveloped lands" in California City "are primed to be cultivated". That is why his ranch will also seek to advance research into the potential benefits of medicinal marijuana , specifically CBD.

According to various reports, the investigators found the doctor used to write free prescriptions to people who were referred to his office by Augello, which would include drugs that were high in demand, such as percocet, oxycontin and oxycodone. The operation finally folded when Kauffman was arrested on weapons charges following a standoff with police at his Egg Harbor Township medical office on June 13, 2017. Her body was discovered by a handyman who cared for pet birds in the couple's home in the suburb of Atlantic City. During the search at his medical practice, Kauffman allegedly confronted the officers while brandishing a Ruger 9mm handgun.
