Ed Sheeran accused of ripping off Aussie song

Ed Sheeran hit with another

In a claim filed at the US District Court for the Southern District of NY yesterday, January 10, Sean Carey and Beau Golden sued over the "blatant copying" of their song "When I Found You".

Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Ed Sheeran and others are involved in a lawsuit filed Wednesday (Jan. 10) in a NY federal court over the song "The Rest of Our Life".

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sean Carey and Beau Golden filed a lawsuit in NY federal court on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

"The copying is, in many instances, verbatim, note-for-note copying of original elements of the Song, and is obvious to the ordinary observer", the lawsuit reads.

Also listed in the legal documents are Ed's co-writing team - Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac and Amy Wadge.

The plaintiffs claim that Holland shared Rae's "When I Found You" with the defendants "in an effort to gain exposure for Ms. Rae and promote her work".

The three Australians discovered the similarities between the songs in December, when a fan tweeted Rae asking if she had heard the new song by McGraw and Hill "because it "sounds remarkably like When I Found You". As the Hollywood Reporter claims, Carey and Golden are seeking $5million in damages - along with an injunction for the song to be permanently blocked.

It is also suggested that someone at Sony may have facilitated the copying, saying: "It very well may have been an agent of Sony Music Entertainment who provided the other defendants herein with access to the [allegedly infringed] song".

And there's more. "The Tennessean" also reports that there is a personal connection between Sony and the performer of "When I Found You", a singer named Jasmine Rae. According to the document, Holland told the plaintiffs that he frequently works with Sony Music Nashville and communicates with their offices as part of his job.

The duo are being represented by Richard Busch, the same attorney who helped Marvin Gaye's family win a copyright lawsuit against Robin Thicke over the song "Blurred Lines".

Mazda, Toyota select Alabama for new USA auto manufacturing plant
USA sales of small cars fell almost 10 percent previous year as buyers continued a massive shift toward SUVs and pickup trucks. The plant is projected to employ about 4,000 workers and produce approximately 300,000 vehicles a year.

A conference call was allegedly conducted during which Holland admitted to knowing about the infringing song months in advance because "he was tasked with promoting and marketing the infringing song and infringing sound recording before its release", states the complaint.

Jasmine's boyfriend, Tim Holland, was a marketing manager for Sony.

The complaint says that based on downloads, Spotify and YouTube streams, TV broadcasts and live performances, Sheeran and his co-writers have profited in excess of $US5 million from The Rest of Our Life.

In 2016, Busch was involved in the $25 million ($20 million) lawsuit against Sheeran for his song Photograph.

TIO reached out to Sony Music for comment.
