False Alarm Confirmed, No Missile Threat

Hawaiians received a startling emergency alert on mobile devices and across televisions on Saturday morning warning that a ballistic missile was headed toward the state.

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, attributed the false alarm to human error on Twitter later Saturday morning.

"Please disregard message of nuclear attack", emergency officials wrote in a later message. "There is absolutely no incoming ballistic missile threat to Hawaii right now".

After the alert went out, there was panic on social media and confusion on the island.

"What happened today is totally inexcusable", Schatz later added.

The alert sent people scrambling for shelters and their cars, and online for additional news. But officials soon confirmed that it was a false alarm. "There needs to be tough and quick accountability and a fixed process".

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeted its correction 12 minutes after the alert was issued to say it was a false alarm.

"There is no missile threat", the Democratic senator tweeted. "Repeat. False Alarm", the Post said screen shots revealed.
