Haiti 'shocked and outraged' over reported Trump remarks

Donald Trump

Trump was widely reported on Thursday to have questioned in a meeting with lawmakers why the United States should accept more immigrants from Haiti and "s...hole countries" in Africa rather than from places such as Norway.

Trump did not respond to shouted questions about his comments as he signed a proclamation Friday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

"Those sentiments and the way he handled the meetings are not going to bring Democrats closer to the president on substance", the aide said, adding that the comment gives "a glimpse into the reasoning why" the president rejected a deal after "Democrats met him more than halfway".

"What the president said is offensive and doesn't reflect who we are as a country", Murkowski stated in an email distributed by her spokeswoman.

The Trump administration recently announced it would end that status for countries like Haiti and El Salvador, whose citizens came to the US years ago to escape the aftermath of national disasters.

"Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people", spokesman Raj Shah said in a statement issued after The Washington Post first reported Trump's remarks.

But Republican Del. Pat McDonough tells WJZ Trump isn't the only president to use rough language in the White House, and he supports the president on immigration. Many advocates said the comments shed light on why the Trump administration last fall stripped Haitians of Temporary Protected Status - specialized protection granted to people from countries experiencing significant turmoil - in which it would be unsafe for its citizens to return. "Never said 'take them out.' Made up by Dems".

Trump later tweeted that the language he used was tough, but not the language being reported.

First, he insisted his senseless wall be part of an immigration deal and now Trump is spouting vile profanities about Haitian and African immigrants from the Oval Office. We have Haitians who are driving cabs all throughout this country.

On CNN, they began using the word in their chyrons and anchors like Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, and Don Lemon all said it on air.

After reported "sh*thole countries" comment, Trump denies "language used"
Trump's remarks, later confirmed by CBS News' Nancy Cordes, the White House did not deny the comment in a statement. But it wasn't just Democrats objecting. "This behaviour is unacceptable from the leader of our nation", she said.

Haitians were granted Temporary Protected Status following the 2010 natural disaster, which seven years ago today killed 300,000 Haitians and left thousands of others displaced.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a close Trump ally, called on the president to explain his words.

"Kenya is one of the fastest growing countries in Africa", he said. Trump wasn't apologetic about his inflammatory remarks and denied he was racist, instead, blaming the media for distorting his meaning, the confidant said.

"Senator Perdue does not recall the president saying that and the president addressed this himself this morning", said his office's statement.

"The rhetoric just makes it more hard, and that's unfortunate", said Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, a senior House lawmaker. "Something I am most proud of is the relationships that we have built in all of Greensboro and all of the sixth district throughout this community", said Walker.

Rebuke: Paul Ryan, the Speaker of the House and after Trump and Mike Pence, the third-most powerful Republican. rebuked the president for the words calling them "very unfortunate" and "unhelpful". "He is basically a racist", said Uche Ewo, an Atlanta fine arts dealer from Nigeria.
