"Today's actions send a strong message to USA businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable", said Thomas D. Homan, ICE Deputy Director and Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director, "Businesses that hire illegal workers are a pull factor for illegal immigration and we are working hard to remove this magnet".

"Under the current administration, all workers encountered during these investigations who are unauthorized to remain in the USA are subject to administrative arrest and removal from the country", ICE said in its statement on the 7-Eleven operations.

After inspections, officials plan to look at whether the cases warrant administrative action or criminal investigations, Benner said.

Raw pet food trend risks E.coli and Salmonella in owners
Pet owners who are interested in raw meat-based diets should talk to a professional rather than feeding their pets uncooked meat. He said new PFMA guidelines set out how to handle raw meat hygienically.

Benner said they're not just targeting big companies. Many a 7-Eleven franchise has been a steppingstone for new legal immigrants who want to own and run their own small businesses.

In a statement, 7-Eleven Inc., based in Irving, Tex., distanced itself from the situation, saying that the individual stores are franchises that belong to independent business owners, who "are exclusively responsible for their employees, including deciding who to hire and verifying their eligibility to work in the United States".

Unlike other enforcement efforts that have marked Trump's first year in office, Wednesday's actions were aimed squarely at store owners and managers, though 21 workers across the country were arrested on suspicion of being in the country illegally.

One of the biggest workplace immigration raids, in May 2008, resulted in the detention of almost 400 undocumented immigrants, including several children, at an Iowa meatpacking plant. All of those individuals have now been arrested as of November 2017, and eight out of the nine pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay more than $2.6 million in restitution for back wages. The company has more than 8,600 stores across the country. "Showing up at early hours across the country is showing enforcement muscle".

Some immigration hardliners have been pressing Trump to move against employers. "It's going to be inclusive of everything that we see out there", he said. "That reality has changed under the Trump administration ― and they say it themselves, that".

Wednesday's operations were low-key compared to the Bush administration's stings.
