Meryl Streep: 'Oprah is serious about presidential bid'

'The Post' has fun being relevant

For those who don't, however, the film is instructional - right down to its quote from Justice Hugo Black's opinion in the case, a statement, that like the rest of the film strongly resonates today.

Steven Spielberg took the script by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer and directed a movie that will hold up over time.

The Post is without a doubt relevant at a time of attacks on the media and the #MeToo movement.

"When you're told time and time again that you're not good enough, that your opinion doesn't matter as much, when they don't just look past you, when to them you're not even there, when that's been your reality for so long, it's hard not to let yourself think it's actually true". Even though the themes are weighty and the parallels are provocative, my takeaway resembled what Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) growls at one point in the newsroom: "My God, the fun". As the Post battles to preserve First Amendment freedoms, he and Graham must also confront how their cozy relationships with politicians-the Kennedys, LBJ, and Robert McNamara-led them to unwittingly turn blind eyes toward the deceptions that led to the Vietnam War. "President Obama said in a recent interview, 'It's not that democracy is fragile but it's reversible.' I wanted to do more than just sit down and watch television and complain to (wife Kate Capshaw) and my kids about what's happening to our country". But years later the government was still sending soldiers to Vietnam, not to win, but to forestall a humiliating defeat.

GKN propels FTSE to new high on bid rejection
Those calls became louder after a profit warning in October, which was sparked by the difficulties at its aerospace business. Nicholas Hyett, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown , said GKN had "made up for years of lumbering progress in a flash".

Streep concluded her remarks by quoting her character, Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, who strides forward at a crucial moment in the male-dominated 1970s newspaper industry to publish the Pentagon Papers in "The Post".

The former (Meryl Streep) was the first female publisher of a major American newspaper. Hanks' Bradlee is gruff and blunt in his dealings with everyone, including his boss Graham, and a sharp contrast to her diplomatic style of speech.

Her moment of truth comes when Daniel Ellsberg (Matthew Rhys) leaks classified government files to the New York Times. He pursues the story with the purest, strongest force known to journalism - that of the scooped trying to scoop their scooper. When Bradlee assembles reporters to sort pages, you can see the legwork necessary to craft the story.

Even though anyone who knows the history knows what happens, the suspense is palpable. Modern audiences may be taken aback at the easy sexism that Streep's Graham faces in almost every scene, and impressed with the easy grace with which she handles it.

"Mississippi Burning" Klansman dies in prison
Clarion-Ledger investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell uncovered new evidence from Bowers that lead to Killen as the ringleader. Their bodies were found buried in a red-clay dam in rural Neshoba County.

Speaking of authenticity: The real Pentagon Papers that Ellsberg copied are used in several scenes, including the sequences in which we see them scattered on the floor of Bradlee's home.

With such towering actors in the film's defining roles, the remaining cast, including Bob Odenkirk, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, David Cross, and Jesse Plemons fall into place to fill in as needed.

But while it doesn't portray a huge amount of journalism, The Post delights in being a movie about a newspaper. It's an old-school movie in the very best of ways: a story-driven drama that's paced nearly like a thriller, taking us back to days when newspapers were assembled in hot type by men in fedoras (well, maybe that's a costume designer's flourish, but I'd like to believe it) and when suspense could be conveyed by some extremely dramatic Xeroxing.

Since the injunction only covered the Times, Bradlee and his team finally had an opening.
