Half of the study participants were then helped to achieve longer hours of sleep than they usually get by asking them to follow four personalised tips such as to avoid caffeine, not to go to bed hungry or too full and by establishing a relaxing daily routine. However, most research until now has either been observational, leading to the possibility, for instance, that obesity causes poor sleep rather than the other way around, or has looked at the effects of sleep deprivation on appetite. As principal investigator Wendy Hall, of Kings College's Department of Nutritional Sciences put it, "a simple change in lifestyle may really help people to consumer healthier diets".
For the study, the researchers selected 21 individuals and took them through a 45-minute sleep consultation program created to extend their sleep time by up to 1.5 hours in the very night.
According to the study, published today (Jan. 9) in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, lack of sleep that is less than the recommended seven hours a night is linked to various health conditions, including obesity and cardiometabolic diseases which include heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
The team also studied 21 other adults who also were getting less than seven hours' sleep as a control group. They also noticed that the participants who slept better, they reduced their intake of carbohydrates as well.
Pakistan reporter Taha Siddiqui flees armed abductors
And there must be a clear and unequivocal commitment by the Pakistani authorities to end impunity for attacks on journalists. Siddiqui has been vocal against the attacks on Pakistani journalists and "forced disappearances" in the troubled country.
During this time, the participants also wore motion sensors on their wrists that measured the exact amount of sleep they got each night, as well as the amount of time they spent in bed before they actually fell asleep. They found some significant changes in those participants who increased the amount of sleep.
The team suggested that any new sleep routine will take some time to get used to.
But a new study showed that by getting more sleep, people naturally choose healthier foods within a week, eating on average 10 grams less sugar each day.
Results show 86 per cent of the group managed to increase time in bed by an average of 55 minutes, while half increased their sleep duration by an average 21 minutes.
Your right to vote is not 'use it or lose it'
Among other activist groups fighting against the law are the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the League of Women Voters. The laws prohibit states from removing people from voter rolls "by reason of the person's failure to vote".
"Our results also suggest that increasing time in bed for an hour or so longer may lead to healthier food choices", said lead researcher, Haya Al Khatib.
This isn't the first study to link diet and sleep.
The researchers said that they hope to explore these findings further using longer-term studies to deeply examine nutrient intake and sleep-extension behaviors.
