Murder Suspect Jonathan Bennett Ambushes Police Officers, Dies Following Shootout

Jonathan Bennett was killed when he ambushed a group of officers in the parking lot of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Headquarters on Thursday night Police Chief Kerr Putney said

The suspected murderer, 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett, drove into the parking lot in his white Ford Expedition where officers were standing and ambushed them with gunfire, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Police continued searching for Journei's father and asked the public for help in finding him. He has brown shoulder-length dreadlocks and a tattoo of crown "King" on his neck in the middle of his Adam's apple. Bennett arrived in a white vehicle and fired multiple bullets at the officers.

According to CMPD Chief Kerr Putney, just before 11:00 p.m. CMPD officers were meeting outside of headquarters at 601 E. Trade Street for a briefing on an unrelated operation.

At 5:40, CMPD announced the baby had been located and was safe, but that Bennett was still on the run and should be considered armed and risky.
