Out Of 5 People Who Try Cigarettes Become 'Daily Smokers'

Researchers found that 69% of people who had ever tried a cigarette had gone on to become a daily smoker even if just temporarily

The study also revealed that two-thirds of people who try cigarettes go on to become daily smokers, even if temporarily.

Three of the surveys were conducted in the U.S. between 2001 and 2013, another three in the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2014, one in Australia in 2013 and another in New Zealand in 2009.

"It is possible that somebody who is a lifetime non-smoker did try a cigarette when they were a kid but it didn't make any impression on them, and they forgot it or don't see that it is important enough to report", Peter Hajek, professor of psychology and Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit at Queen Marys, told the Guardian.

This is the first time that the remarkable hold that cigarettes can establish after a single experience has been documented from such a large set of data.

Around seven million Brit adults smoke - with one person a minute is admitted to hospital due to tobacco.

The results of the research that has been conducted by the researchers of the Queen Mary University of London, have been published in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research. Data were analysed to calculate the conversion rate from ever trying a cigarette to ever smoking daily.

Linda Bauld, professor of health policy at the University of Stirling, said the study highlighted the importance of preventing smoking in the first place.

This does not take recall error and personal bias into account, as the study relies on people to provide information about their historical smoking habits.

Dozens feared dead after smuggling boat sinks in Mediterranean
The Spanish rescue group known as "Proactiva Open Arms" said in a tweet that "dozens of other passengers will never be found". Migrants in a dinghy are rescued by Libyan coast guards off the coast of Garabulli early Monday, east of Tripoli.

It is no secret that cigarettes are highly addictive.

In 2016, 15.8% of adults smoked - equivalent to around 7.6 million people. It's the first time when experimenting with cigarettes is linked to becoming a smoker on such a large scale.

"The UK is seeing a dramatic reduction in smoking at the moment and this tallies with recent findings that only 19% of 11-15 year olds have ever tried a cigarette, so the good news is that we are on the right track".

For example, among the eight surveys, each revealed different percentages for those who became daily smokers, ranging from 52 percent in the U.S.to 82 percent in the United Kingdom, meaning the two-thirds estimate was a weighted average, not a standard proportion.

It's not quite The Wall, but it is 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle. Temperatures are up to negative five centigrade insides.

Meanwhile around 2.9 million people in the United Kingdom were e-cigarette users in 2016, it said. "The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story", Hajek said.
