'Raising Iran unrest at United Nations a blunder'

Iran's ambassador to the U.N., Gholamali Khoshroo, said the USA had abused its power as a permanent member of the Security Council.

But Russia's ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, said the USA was "abusing the platform of the Security Council".

Seyyed Hossein Naghavi Hosseini told Mehr News about the recent UN Security Council session and the USA attempt to bring up the topic of the recent protests in Iran and said "the United States has always interfered in the domestic affairs of other countries".

At least 21 people have been killed and hundreds arrested amid the anti-government protests and unrest over the country's economic woes.

Under its charter, the United Nations empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to worldwide friction".

Iran should be allowed to deal with its own problems, he said asserting that the Council should not be involved in destabilising Iran.

Observing that the Council's primary responsibility is maintaining worldwide peace and security, Wu Haito of China said that it should not be the venue for discussing the human rights situation of any country.

Russian Federation said Washington was overstepping into Iran's domestic affairs.

The Trump administration has denied having any hand in the demonstrations, saying they arose completely spontaneously. He also has described Iran as "failing at every level" and declared it is "TIME FOR CHANGE!"
