Republicans ask Supreme Court to block redistricting order

The judges in the North Carolina case have given Republican lawmakers until January 24 to offer replacement maps or yield to an appointed special master.

"Simply put, after taking months to issue an opinion adopting multiple entirely novel theories of partisan gerrymandering, the three-judge court has given the General Assembly just two weeks to draw a third congressional map, which is sufficiently unlikely to pass the court's muster that the court has already made a decision to have a special master draw a competing map", Strach said in his court filing.

Plaintiffs in the case argued Republicans drew oddly shaped maps to make a handful of districts where Democrats would have huge electoral advantages and more where Republicans would be likely to win.

The U.S. Supreme Court should step in to halt a lower court's partisan gerrymandering ruling in North Carolina because of an "eleventh-hour disruption", according to an emergency document filed Friday.

AG: Girl can use medical marijuana at school
The parents said the policy violates the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The law prohibits smoking the drug in school, but allows patches or tinctures, as long as it's not disruptive to classrooms.

It would effectively stop the two week clock the federal judges gave the legislature to redraw all of North Carolina's congressional districts.

The deadline is important because candidates for the November congressional elections begin filing for the primaries on February 12.

Bob Phillips of Common Cause disagrees with Woodhouse.

"We're enormously gratified on behalf of our clients and all voters in North Carolina that no one will have to endure another congressional election under an unconstitutional map", said Allison Riggs, senior voting rights attorney for the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, which represented some of the challengers.

"It makes no sense whatsoever to force North Carolina to immediately remedy a purported partisan gerrymandering violation and commence its 2018 election cycle under a new court-imposed map before this court can even decide whether and under what circumstances such claims may be adjudicated", Clement told Roberts, who receives appeals from North Carolina.

North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Goodwin called the ruling a "major victory for North Carolina and people across the state whose voices were silenced by Republicans' unconstitutional attempts to rig the system to their partisan advantage".

A different three-judge panel that also includes Wynn is considering state House and state Senatedistricts.

At least one time, elections were held for maps ultimately deemed unconstitutional.

California mudslides death toll rises with 13 still missing
Some of Montecito residents on Wednesday returned to their homes to see what they could salvage from the ruins. Josie Gower held onto a door frame when the terrifying river of mud rushed inside her Montecito home.

Gerry Cohen, a former legislative staffer who worked on redistricting plans from 1981 to 2011, echoed on Friday what he said a year ago after North Carolina's congressional maps were declared to have two unconstitutional gerrymanders. The primaries and candidate filing period was pushed back but the election, more or less, ran without any redistricting chaos. "Who knows what might happen".
