Russia Investigation Will Produce More Indictments in 2018, House Judiciary Democrat Predicts

In May 2016, Papadopoulos allegedly revealed to Australian diplomat Alexander Downer that Russian officials were shopping possible damaging information on Clinton, likely implying that Russian officials were offering the information to the Trump campaign, the newspaper reported.

Mr Downer, the former Liberal Party leader and foreign minister who is now Australia's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, appears to have played a critical role in the FBI's decision to investigate Russian meddling in the USA election.

When leaked Democratic Party emails began appearing in public two months later, Australian officials allegedly passed Mr Downer's intel to their U.S. counterparts.

The hacking and the revelation that a member of the Trump campaign may have had inside information about it were driving factors that led the F.B.I.to open an investigation in July 2016 into Russia's attempts to disrupt the election and whether any of President Trump's associates conspired. As of press time, neither Trump nor the White House have issued a statement about the New York Times report in question.

It was not, as Mr. Trump and other politicians have alleged, a dossier compiled by a former British spy hired by a rival campaign.

Mr Downer, who reportedly held his liquor better, won an admission from Mr Papadopoulos that he knew Russian Federation had "political dirt" on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

It all started during the early days of the 2016 presidential election and the campaign of Donald Trump.

However, regardless of how large his role was in the Trump campaign, the new report from the New York Times indicates that he may be responsible for the Russian investigation.

The Times article also provides more detail about the labryinthine path through which Papadopoulos attempted to set up a meeting between Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Australia later informed the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the Democratic emails were leaked. He is now likely cooperating with investigators.

Papadopoulos apparently shared information provided to him by Joseph Mifsud, a London-based professor with ties to Moscow officials, who told him that the Russians had "thousands of emails" obtained by hackers from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) that had yet to be released. The American public has promised mass protests if the president dismisses Mueller before the probe concludes, and continues to closely follow the story-which this week NPR readers selected as the top political story of 2017.

But Turnbull said he was not at all anxious his relationship with Donald Trump had been damaged.

"The relationship is in excellent shape and the connections between Australia and the United States are so diverse, numerous, so strong, and indeed, our relationship through the State Department is excellent as well", Turnbull told reporters, according to the ABC.
