School board gets death threats after teacher handcuffed after questioning pay raise

Deyshia Hargrave facing left who was arrested for speaking out at a school board meeting this week hugs a friend before a rally in her support in Abbeville La. Thursday

Public outcry ensued earlier this week when a teacher was arrested after inquiring about a superintendent's raise.

Louisiana teacher Deyshia Hargrave is likely to file a lawsuit over a breach of First Amendment rights after she was roughly ejected from a school board meeting and arrested for questioning her superintendent's pay rise.

The Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE) and Vermilion Association of Educators said they are facilitating this current evening's rally in Abbeville, Louisiana, in help of Hargrave and the instructors and understudies of Vermilion Parish.

The threats, coming in from places within the United States and as far away as England, South America and even Australia, ultimately caused the school board's office to temporarily go on lockdown, CBS News reported.

Public records show base salaries for Vermilion Parish teachers a year ago ranged from $39,458 to $58,658. "And I'm appalled at this, and you should be too".

The video shows Hargrave getting handcuffed on the floor of a hallway. "I am way smaller than you!"

Hargrave returned to the classroom on Wednesday after the local prosecutor said he wouldn't pursue charges against the teacher.

In the video, in which Hargrave can be heard crying out as she is led away, the officer can be heard asking: "What are you doing ... stop resisting".

LaVar Ball , now in Lithuania helping his younger sons settle into their new team, will likely not be in attendance. The Lakers must be wondering if it was worth it to draft Lonzo, for all the grief they're getting from his father.

Puyau said that the school system would not press charges.

School board president Anthony Fontana also defended the actions of the officer in an interview with KATC, comparing the action taken to a student's being punished for unruliness.

"This is not about the board". "Women in this parish are not getting the same treatment". "Well, she made a choice".

"When she realized she had to get out, she picked up her purse and walked out", LeBeouf observed.

Not all board members agree with Fontana.

But here's the catch: The event took place in Vermilion Parish, La., 1,189 miles from the Lake Erie Vermilion that straddles Lorain and Erie counties. "I was seriously panicked", she said.

Fontana later fired back at his fellow school board member. Disagreement from other board members shed light on a major rift in the group.

"So all this stuff about "this is a woman's issue" is BS". "We'll see how it goes", she said. Meanwhile, the superintendent of Vermilion Parish Schools says he, his staff and his family have received death threats over the incident.

Puyau hasn't responded to HuffPost's repeated requests for comment.

"Leave our community out, and our schools, and stay away", he said.

Hargrave released a video Wednesday saying she hopes people aren't afraid to speak out after seeing what happened to her.

"By taking away my voice they've taken away - or tried to take away - my First Amendment rights to speak", Hargrave said in a video posted on the Louisiana Association of Educators' Facebook page.

At the rally a letter was read from a mother in New Jersey who she said she frequently goes to school board meetings and speaks from "time to time".

"It's my understanding that the marshal will be bringing in an independent law enforcement agency to conduct a full and complete investigation", Funderburk said.

"Our people know what to do, and when it happened, that person, that marshal, acted in what we asked him to do", said Puyau.

"Her mistreatment highlights the issues that educators face worldwide ... She called out an injustice". "In 30 years I've never seen anything like this", Blackwell told CNN.
