Glenn Simpson, the founder of research firm Fusion GPS - who commissioned former MI6 officer Christopher Steele to compile the dossier - testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee in August.

The political battle over the FBI and its investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election intensified Tuesday with the release of an interview with the head of the firm behind a dossier of allegations against then-candidate Donald Trump. Neither committee had intentions of releasing the transcripts from its interview with Mr. Simpson.

Ms. Feinstein moved to do so without the committee's Republican chairman, Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, nearly certainly escalating partisan tensions on the committee. Let's make all of the Russian-Trump-FBI record public.

If anything, Trump's name calling only helps Feinstein in her 2018 primary race.

Trump Denies Collusion But Doesn't Commit to Mueller Interview
At a press conference in the summer, Trump said he was "100%" willing to testify under oath about his conversations with James B. ADVERTISEMENTTrump's legal team is reportedly looking to find out if Trump would be directly interviewed by Mueller.

But in the late stages of the 2016 presidential campaign, Steele broke off with the FBI, Simpson said, because he did not believe it was taking him seriously enough.

Dianne Feinstein released the transcript from an August closed-door committee interview with Glenn Simpson after the Republican chairman of the committee, Iowa Sen.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein released a transcript of the interview on Tuesday, after repeated disagreements with Republicans on the committee.

"The innuendo and misinformation circulating about the transcript are part of a deeply troubling effort to undermine the investigation", she said. However, a person close to the investigation said Fusion GPS has long anxious that Steele's sources could be in danger, given a handful of killings that took place in the months after the dossier's existence became known. It also describes lascivious behavior that might embarrass Trump or could have been used as leverage to influence him.

"Essentially, what he (Steele) told me was they had other intelligence about this matter from an internal Trump campaign source and.my understanding was that they believed Chris' information might be credible", Simpson told investigators. The former reporter for the Wall Street Journal commissioned what proved to be Steele's salacious - and unproven - dossier on Trump's alleged ties to Russian Federation.

A special counsel and three congressional committees - including the Senate Judiciary Committee - are investigating Russia's campaign of cyber attacks and disinformation to influence the election in favor of Trump. Simpson acknowledged that he didn't like Trump as a candidate but said his job was to find facts, not to push an agenda.

But Simpson declined to talk about the steps he took to assess the credibility of Steele's sources.

In a statement, Fusion GPS said it "commends Sen". "Her action undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony relating to the independent recollections of future witnesses".

Trump and some Republicans have attacked both Simpson's firm and Steele in recent months and also questioned the impartiality of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department in an apparent effort to discredit Mueller's probe.

For other critics, the Simpson transcript includes a reminder about his potentially conflicting incentives: Fusion GPS has also done work for a law firm that represented the Russian company Prevezon Holdings. Lindsay Graham last week asked the Justice Department to investigate Steele, saying they had information about false statements he may have made to the government.
