Johnson urges Aung San Suu Kyi to help Rohingya refugees

The United Nations has described the exodus of Rohingya as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Yanghee Lee, the United Nations human rights investigator for Myanmar who has been barred from visiting the Rohingya areas, echoed that call and added in a tweet: "Independent & credible investigation needed to get to the bottom of the Inn Din massacre".

Action will be taken against 10 members of Myanmar's security forces in connection with the killing of captured Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, a government spokesman said on Sunday, adding it was not related to a Reuters report on the incident.

Paet said that the European Union, member state and the global public must also increase their financial and material contribution to help the Rohingya refugees.

That public admission followed the arrests of the two Myanmar journalists who were investigating the massacre and are now facing up 14 years in prison on charges of possessing secret documents.

BH Loya death case: Opposition delegation submits memorandum to President
What is required is a thorough investigation through a team of independent officers selected and monitored by the Supreme Court". Two petitions asking for an investigation into Judge Loya's death are being heard by the Supreme Court.

Mr Johnson is due to tour Rakhine State with representatives from the Burmese military later.

There has been no official comment from the government following the publication of the report.

"As more evidence comes out about the pre-planning and intent of the Myanmar armed forces to wipe out Rohingya villages and their inhabitants, the worldwide community ... needs to focus on how to hold the country's military leaders accountable", said HRW's deputy Asia director Phil Robertson.

But Myanmar vehemently denies systematic abuses by its security officers, despite a mounting volume of evidence pointing to atrocities.

Boris Johnson has said Rohingya Muslim refugees should return to Myanmar only of their own accord and when the "conditions are right".

Larry Nassar moved to Federal Prison in Arizona
Former USA gymnastics and Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar has been transferred to a high security prison in Tucson. A judge in December sentenced Nassar to 60 years in federal prison on three counts of child porn possession.

Ahead of the talks, the UK's Foreign office said Johnson would press for an "end to the suffering in Rakhine and the safe and voluntary return of the refugees".

"Talking just to some of my fellow foreign ministers from around the world, there is so much confusion still, and I think the role of journalism in setting the record straight is absolutely vital", Johnson said.

The Reuters special report, published overnight, lays out events leading up to the killing of 10 Rohingya men from Inn Din village in Rakhine state who were buried in a mass grave after being hacked to death or shot by Buddhist neighbours and government military.

Almost 690,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine and crossed into southern Bangladesh since August, when attacks on security posts by rebels triggered a military crackdown that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide.
