NBC apologizes for comments during PyeongChang opener

NBC Issues Apology To Korean People After Correspondent's Insensitive Comment

"But", Ramo continued, "every Korean will tell you that Japan as a cultural and technological and economic example has been so important to their own transformation".

"Every Korean will tell you that Japan is a cultural and technical and economic example that has been so important to their own transformation", Ramo said.

Slate wrote that Ramo's commentary amounted to bland trivia about Asia "seemingly plucked from hastily written social studies reports" - such as his observation that white and blue flags stood for North and South Korean unity.

South Korean PM to host lunch for high-level DPRK delegation
The last summit was held in October 2007 between Roh Moo-hyun and Kim Jong Il, the father of the current North Korean leader. Mr Moon said the Koreas should "make it happen" and encouraged the North to return to negotiations with the US.

The controversy started when analyst Joshua Cooper Ramo, who was hired to bring historical context to NBC's coverage, noted how significant Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit was.

During NBC's Winter Olympics opening ceremony coverage last week, analyst Joshua Cooper Ramo made an observation about the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula that was seen as highly offensive and insensitive to Koreans.

NBC said it's "grateful" PyeongChang's organising committee accepted the network's apology.

This set off a firestorm of criticism from Koreans around the world, many who pointed out that Japan brutally occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, which led to untold suffering and the country splitting into to two parts. In fact, thousands signed a petition demanding that NBC apologize for Ramo's statement.

Manhattan Polar Plunge raises money for Special Olympics
The Oakland County Polar Plunge took place Saturday morning at the Rochester Hills Brewing Company. After about 45 minutes of plunging, the group carefully hustled back inside to get warm.

NBC didn't catch the mind-boggling gaffe despite broadcasting the opening ceremonies on tape in the United States - 14 hours after it happened. Petitioners said anyone familiar with Japanese treatment of Koreans during that time would be deeply hurt by Ramo's remark.

"We believe that staying silent is not an appropriate response to such ignorant, insensitive, and harmful information that defies the very spirit of peace, harmony, and human dignity of the Olympics", it said.

The network had no real explanation for the insane comment other than to say sorry.
