Japan says S Korea's Moon promised help to resolve abduction issue

Sweden acts as diplomatic representative in North Korea for the United States, which has no embassy there, and has helped with the release of US citizens held by the reclusive state.

Discussions about the talks come after the head of the US Pacific Command said the US could not be overly optimistic about the outcome of any summit between US President Donald Trump and Mr Kim, aimed at ending the North's nuclear and missile programmes, and must go into it with "eyes wide open".

Sweden's foreign minister held what she called "good and constructive" talks with her North Korean counterpart on Friday amid growing speculation about a possible meeting in the Scandinavian country between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He noted that the summit will follow a meeting between South Korean and North Korean leaders in late April.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho plans to visit Sweden, the Swedish foreign ministry has said, raising the possibility that his trip might be aimed at contacting US officials ahead of a proposed summit between the two countries.

A Japanese government source said Abe communicated Japan's stance to Moon "from the perspective of what would be most effective" to settle the abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s.

In a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last month, he urged the United Nations not to remain silent about what he called "the USA unsafe game of aggravating (the) situation in and around the Korean peninsula and driving the whole world into a possible disaster of nuclear war".

A senior US administration official told AFP: "No US government staff are meeting with the North Koreans in Sweden". Choe Kang-il, a senior North Korean diplomat handling US affairs, was also said to have arrived at the airport.

Even amid North Korea tensions, Trump has repeatedly denounced a USA free trade deal with ally South Korea as "unfair" and threatened many times to scrap it.

Penn State needed it, too, because Snyder won the heavyweight title soon after with a 3-2 decision over MI nemesis Adam Coon. The Nittany Lions are one of four teams in the postseason, Notre Dame and MI are in separate regionals around the bracket.

Global media have speculated that Sweden could either help set up a summit or be a potential location if a tete-a-tete were to be confirmed.

Japan said yesterday that Mr Moon had also promised to help Mr Abe resolve the issue of Japanese abducted by North Korea, and agreed to keep maximum pressure on Pyongyang over its nuclear and missile programmes.

"We value this opportunity to arrange a meeting", she said without specifying to what she was referring.

"We have always said we want to be a mediator that facilitates this process", he said.
