Lalu Yadav Convicted In Fourth Fodder Scam Case: A Timeline Of Events

A Ranchi Special CBI court on Monday (March 19) declared RJD chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav guilty in the fourth Dumka Treasure fodder scam case.

While Yadav has been convicted for fraudulent withdrawal of Rs. 3.13cr from the Dumka treasury, former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra has been acquitted.

Apart from Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, 29 others including former IAS officers and animal husbandry officials were accused in the Dumka Treasury case.

Lalu Prasad's RJD saw a political revival after it won the Bihar Assembly election in 2015 as part of the Grand Alliance which included the JD (U) and the Congress.

In today's verdict by the special CBI court, former Public Accounts Committee Chairmen Jagdish Sharma and Dhruv Bhagat, ex-MLA R K Rana, former Bihar minister Vidya Sagar Nishad were also acquitted in the case.

There were total 76 accused in the case and 15 died during trial while five turned CBI approver, reported IANS. However, the sentence has not yet been announced. The quantum of punishment in the case would be pronounced later.

The guilty - Ajit Kumar Verma, Anand Kumar Singh, Nand Kishore, Mahendra Singh altar, Raj Kumar, Raja Ram, Raghunandan Prasad, Rajendra Kumar, Phoolchand and Sarmendra Das have been found guilty.

The court had postponed the judgment on Thursday in view of the counsel for Lalu Prasad filing a petition under 319 CrPC asking the then three officials of the Accountant General (in the 1990s) be made a party to the case. He was convicted in the fodder scam for illegally withdrawing Rs 89.27 lakh from Deogarh treasury over 2 decades ago in December previous year. So far, the RJD chief has been convicted in four cases of fodder scam.

Prasad has been in Birsa Munda jail at Ranchi since December 23 previous year after being convicted in the second case pertaining to illegal withdrawal of money from Deogarh treasury. On December 23, 2017, he was convicted in the second case and was sentenced to three-and-half years in jail. 42 Judges from across are participating in the two-day training programme conducting at the judicial academy in Ranchi.
