Local students usher in school safety talks

To avoid making a hard situation worse, Kylee's boyfriend stayed in class during the rally at Hillcrest High School in Idaho Falls, which was part of Wednesday's national school walkout.

No one really has the magic answer that will make the students and teachers who died on February 14 the last ones to lose their lives so horrifically, so senselessly. The student politely declined. He commended Principal Mark Manning's handling of the event, but said hearing all those names was "powerful, and kind of sad", and convinced him it was time to take a stand.

But the discussions at many Mercer County schools this week were really not about guns or gun control.

Another organizer, 8th grader Sarah Farbiarz, was happy with how the event turned out. The 17-minute rally honored the 17 lives lost at Parkland, outlined our demands for Congress, and emphasized that gun violence not only makes us feel unsafe in school, but also disproportionately impacts people of color and women in abusive relationships. They also need to restrict the sale of automatic assault rifles. I'm not blaming officials for anything, I'm not accusing them of doing anything wrong. "If you want to fall asleep knowing that you will survive school the next day, then you need to shout". It was, as you said, "the largest student-led protests since at least the early 1970s". The kids were so great.

A letter to parents on Monday from the principal, Mark Manning, said the plans had been devised with input from student government leaders.

So when events were kept indoors because of safety issues, or students were required to gather outdoors in specific, secured locations, that defeats the whole point.

Pelicans' Alvin Gentry Slams Officiating After Loss To Rockets
In the game, Houston attempted 18 free throws while New Orleans took just 16. "We are fighting our asses off for a playoff spot". When a guy's got his hands on his chest, and he's got his hands in, and you call a three-point shot [a foul], that's not right.

Students were still encouraged to speak up or write their legislators.

Molloy said she was excited to see students with different viewpoints. In some school districts, they did so under threat of suspension.

Students now in school have grown up with gun violence being a relevant concern in schools. Others planned demonstrations in school gyms or on football fields.

The superintendent said the District worked closely with police to ensure safety and security, always paramount, while honoring the memories of the Parkland students.

As she addressed the crowd during the walkout at her Idaho high school, Kylee Denny faced heckles and name-calling from a group of students carrying American flags, she said.

Ninth-grade student Cassandra Morley was among those who participated.

Vikings sign Sheldon Richardson
The Vikings already had a good offseason to begin with, inking Cousins to a three-year deal worth a fully-guaranteed $84 million. Dorsey's track record suggests he'll go quarterback first, but we'll see. "I'm very effective around the quarterback", he added.

"This is the future", Yarmouth High senior Eliza Brown said while encouraging other students to make themselves heard at the polls.

More than 3,000 walkouts were planned across the USA and around the world, organizers said.

Although Williams said school violence is alarming in general, "I feel like we're constantly very proactive to keeping things safe and presenting hazards, so ..." However it started a conversation throughout the student body and community.

Exchanging a walkout with words, students say, was a way for them to show support without any other agenda. "If they want to take away our Second Amendment right, why can't we take away their amendment of freedom of speech?"

In joining the protests, the students followed the example set by numerous survivors of the Florida shooting, who have become gun-control activists, leading rallies, lobbying legislators and giving TV interviews. And was it a good idea to reprimand the young people who took part?
