Michael Carrick to hang up his boots at end of the season

Michael Carrick has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season

The former England global, 36, made the announcement at United's press conference on Monday to preview the Champions League last 16, second leg against Sevilla.

Carrick has played a limited role for United this season after undergoing a routine heart procedure following a League Cup tie with Burton in September.

"There comes a time when, as much as you like or don't like it, your body tells you it's time to stop playing football", the midfielder admitted. "That's pretty much where I'm at, which is fine".

Carrick added: "All the glitz and the glamour that can surround things these days, Scott doesn't seem too interested in that, which is fantastic - especially at this stage of his career". It's something you have to accept. "That's pretty much where I'm at".

The former England worldwide stated that he is likely to next assume a first-team coaching role at Manchester United following the end of his playing career.

There were two or three times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that".

"I'm totally fine now, took a bit of time to get over". But that quickly passed and I got back fit.

The 36-year-old, who joined Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 for an £18m fee, became a mainstay in his side over the years and has a decorated trophy cabinet - winning five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League trophy.
