Prosecutor seeks death for Florida gunman

The shooter Nikolas Cruz as he as arrested

The former student accused of killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last month will face the death penalty, prosecutors announced Tuesday. Those factors, enshrined in Florida law, include that Mr. Cruz "knowingly created a great risk of death to many persons" and that the capital felony at issue was "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel".

This story will be updated. The 19-year-old Cruz is scheduled for formal arraignment Wednesday on a 34-count indictment, including 17 first-degree murder charges.

Prosecutors in Florida have said they will seek the death penalty for Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz.

Nikolas Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and 17 counts of attempted murder for the attack on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in which 14 students and three staff died. Such a case would be among the state's highest-profile recent prosecutions, and it would also be a rarity following a mass shooting, which usually do not end with attackers taken into custody. His attorneys also offered to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence. The state now requires that the sentencing jury be unanimous in recommending a death sentence before the trial judge may impose one.
