Putin cruises to landslide election win

The Trump administration has hit Russians with sanctions over election meddling and cyber attacks

While final results had yet to be released as Russians gathered in Moscow's Manezhnaya Square for a Putin rally, it was clear that the Russian President was well ahead of the 63.6% he secured in the last election in 2012 - and on track to reach a widely reported goal of winning 70% of the votes cast.

People walk passed the British Consulate General, in St.Petersburg, Russia, Saturday, March 17, 2018.

The PM has said it is "highly likely" Russia was behind the attack, demanding answers from Moscow, and expelled Russian diplomats from British soil.

The results are expected to take at least two weeks.

The rare united comment from Theresa May, Donald Trump, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, released by Downing Street, follows extensive UK efforts to drum up global support for its response to the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter with the novichok nerve agent.

Sunday marks four years since Putin signed a treaty declaring Crimea to be part of Russian Federation in a move that triggered a pro-Kremlin insurgency in east Ukraine, a conflict that has claimed over 10,000 lives.Ahead of the vote, a new crisis broke out with the West as Britain implicated Putin in the poisoning of former double agent Sergei Skripal with a Soviet-designed nerve agent.

In his first comments on the poisoning, Putin said the attack on ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter was a "tragedy", but added that if the British claim that they were poisoned by the Soviet-designed nerve agent were true, the victims would have died instantly.

Russia votes as Putin eyes 4th presidential term
They suspended the chief of a polling station near Moscow where a ballot stuffing incident was reported and sealed the ballot box. The result would extend the leader's total time in office to almost a quarter of a century, by which time he will be 71.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Putin gave his most detailed public comments on that case, saying, "It's complete nonsense to imagine that anyone in Russian Federation could resort to such tricks ahead of the presidential elections and World Cup".

The Russian leader said his nation was ready to cooperate with British authorities.

Johnson's comment came after a Russian envoy suggested the toxin used to poison the Skripals could have come from a United Kingdom lab.

"We actually have evidence within the last 10 years that Russian Federation has not only been investigating the delivery of nerve agents for the purposes of assassination, but has also been creating and stockpiling Novichok", Johnson told the BBC.

"[T] hey have been producing and stockpiling Novichok, contrary to what they have been saying", said Johnson, as reported by the AP.

Experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in the Netherlands, will meet British scientists and police to begin investigating samples of the nerve agent on Monday.

Britain says it is Novichok, a class of powerful nerve agent developed in the Soviet Union toward the end of the Cold War.

Country feeling tired under Modi, Cong will bring change: Rahul
People from the press are scared, for the first time, we saw four Supreme Court judges running to the public for justice. Unfortunately, the BJP government has disrupted it, and its ill-advised actions have unravelled the national consensus.

"That is exactly the tactics we've come to expect from Russian Federation over the last few years", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

He accused the Kremlin of lying over its chemical weapons arsenal as investigators arrive in Britain to investigate the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. They remain in critical condition.

Asked by Mr Marr if he was suggesting Porton Down was responsible, he replied: 'I don't know, I don't have any evidence of anything having been used'.

Speaking from his Moscow headquarters, Navalny dismissed Putin's challengers on the ballot as "puppets", urged Russian voters to boycott the presidential election as he was doing and vowed to continue defying the Kremlin with street protests.

It reported ballot stuffing and other cases of alleged fraud as the Kremlin pushed for high turnout to give greater legitimacy to Putin's historic fourth term.

Western powers see the poisoning of the Skripals as the latest sign of increasingly aggressive Russian interference in foreign countries.

The concern is that bored voters, certain that Putin will easily be re-elected, may not bother to vote.
