White House expects N.Korea summit to happen despite Pyongyang's silence

Four days after the surprise announcement that President Trump has agreed to meet the North’s Kim Jong Un by May Washington has yet to hear directly from Pyongyang on the invitation extended by Kim via South Korean intermediaries

After President Donald Trump agreed to meet with North Korean President Kim Jong Un, with specific details yet to be worked out, Bloomberg is reporting that Kim may request that the signing of a peace treaty at a proposed meeting with the USA president. The summit, which Trump said would take place by May, would be the first between a sitting us president and a North Korean leader.

Trump agreed to meet with Kim Jong Un by the end of May and the two Koreas will hold a summit by end-April.

Rhetoric in the North's state media has been tame, however, compared to previous threats a year ago that went as far as saying Pyongyang would fire missiles to the vicinity of the USA territory of Guam if provoked. Sherman said that while she did not believe Kim is "in any rush to denuclearize", she was glad the United States is entering into talks, even if it just starts with "a meeting".

On Friday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the meeting wouldn't take place "until we see concrete actions that match the words and the rhetoric of North Korea".

Then she turned to Trump's voters: "And his whole campaign - "Make America Great Again" - was looking backward". She accused Trump of "stalking me" on the stage.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has accepted Kim's offer to meet near their shared border next month, a meeting in which Kim was expected to suggest resuming cultural exchanges and family reunions.

But Pence called Kim's offers to cease missile and nuclear testing while not objecting to U.S.

"There's already been a bit of confusion in the messaging from the White House so it probably makes sense to get some of the ground rules established before go public with it", said Abrahamian.

Trump, in a surprise move, accepted the invitation Thursday.

Still, Tillerson provided a few more specifics to reporters on the flight back from Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is continuing to prepare on a number of levels for the meeting. Ironically, South Korea was not a signatory.

The head of that South Korean delegation, National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday and will head to Moscow on Tuesday.

South Korea's National Security Office chief, Chung Eui-yong, who led the delegation to Pyongyang, will head to Russian Federation on Tuesday, while spy agency chief Suh Hoon met Japan's foreign minister in Tokyo, where he is to speak with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday. It has continued to warn the United States and Japan against war-mongering, but its rhetoric has been tame compared with threats exchanged at the height of tensions previous year.
