Alfie Evans' parents lose legal fight to move son to Italian hospital

Tom Evans and Kate James disagree with doctors on their son's prognosis

Like any parent of a very sick child, Alfie's parents want to be able to spend as much time with him as possible while he's in the hospital - especially with a protracted legal battle that could result in yanking his life support and ending his life at any time.

A United Kingdom judge has refused to overturn a previous judge's decision that it is in baby Alfie Evans' "best interest" to discontinue ventilation, which will likely cause his death.

Judges have heard that Alfie, born on May 9 2016, is in a "semi-vegetative state" and has a degenerative neurological condition doctors had not definitively diagnosed.

"There is a passion out there", Mr Diamond told appeal judge Lord Justice Davis, Lady Justice King and Lord Justice Moylan.

The case ultimately revolves around the question of whether parents have the right to make healthcare decisions for their children.

A United Kingdom judge denied an appeal from Alfie Evans' parents Monday to have him treated outside the country, saying their parental rights did not matter.

Carroll's late strike leaves Potters in peril
He added: "I must have walked under a ladder or broken a mirror somewhere because I have not had any luck whatsoever". The hosts are seven points clear of the relegation zone, with Stoke five points adrift of safety with four games left.

Crowds of demonstrators have gathered and remained outside Alder Hey hospital in constant protest to support Alfie and his parents' attempts to seek continued treatment for him.

The toddler's family have said they are accompanied by their own doctors, have removed duty of care from the hospital and placed it with their air ambulance, and have a jet ready to take the child to Italy.

The letter, from the Liverpool hospital's chief nurse, said the only Alfie's parents and two named visitors were now allowed to visit the Peadiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICO) at one time.

Justice Moylan also said that the baby's independent guardian has agreed with the hospital that withdrawing ventilation is in the baby's "best interests".

The justice stated that the parental rights of Tom and Kate over Alife "do not take precedence".

"We're never going to give up on you, Alfie".

Last month, Mr Justice Hayden had ruled that it was in Alfie's best interests for his treatment to be withdrawn.

Appeal court officials say an appeal court judge had decided that Alfie should continue to receive treatment pending the outcome of Monday's Court of Appeal hearing. "It is precisely because of this judicial determination that Aflie has been kept in Alder Hey Hospital", he said.

Alfie, whose battle has inspired the support of thousands across the world, suffers from an undiagnosed brain disease.

Mr Diamond is asking appeal court judges to overturn decisions made by Mr Justice Hayden last week.

Mr Evans and Ms James have previously taken the Bootle toddler's case to the High Court, Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights.
