Amarinder defends govt stand in road rage case against Sidhu

Punjab government seeks Navjot Singh Sidhu's arrest in road rage case

The Punjab government on Thursday appealed in the Supreme Court for upholding a high court order for the conviction of its own minister, Navjot Singh Sidhu, in a 30-year-old road rage case. While there was no formal reaction from the Chief Minister's office, Nanda, who is in Bangkok, said, "The state could not have changed its stand in the FIR that was registered in a murder case".

As per the prosecution case, Sidhu and Sandhu were allegedly present in a Gypsy parked near Sheranwala Gate Crossing on December 27, 1988, when Gurnam Singh, Jaswinder Singh and one other were going to bank to withdraw money for a marriage function. "The matter is subjudice and I can not react on it", a visibly upset Sidhu said in his response to the Punjab government stand at a media interaction in Hyderabad on Friday morning.

On Thursday, state counsel Sangram Singh Saron told a SC bench of justices J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul that the trial court's verdict was unreasonable and was rightly reversed by the Punjab and Haryana high court. The state government took a clear stand against Sidhu by declaring that his statement to the court was false. The incumbent Punjab minister appeared disappointed, but chose not to react on the government's stand that he be punished in the 1988 road rage case. The SAD accused the Congress government of "shielding" him. "He can not remain a member of a government", Akali leaders Bikram Singh Majithia said.

In September 1999, a trial court had acquitted Sidhu of the murder charge. Aam Aadmi Party MLA and the Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira said, "It is now up to Sidhu whether he can sit in the same Cabinet and the government which finds him guilty".
