Britain's cabinet gave Prime Minister Theresa May the green light Thursday to join the United States and France in planning possible military strikes in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria.

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert has said the US has "a very high level of confidence" that Syria was responsible for the recent chemical attack in the Middle East nation.

"These are not the actions of a man, they are the crimes of a monster instead", he said of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"We hope that. the USA and their allies will refrain from military action against a sovereign state", said Russian Ambassador to the U.N. Vassily Nebenzia.

He accused Russian Federation of being complicit in Syria's retention of chemical weapons, despite a 2013 deal that Moscow helped broker requiring Syria to abandon them.

"Smart missiles should fly toward terrorists, not the legal government that has been fighting global terrorism for several years on its territory", Zakharova wrote in response to Trump's Wednesday tweet.

The strikes seemed unlikely to have much impact on the balance of power in Syria's seven-year-old civil war, in which Assad's government has steadily gained the upper hand against armed opponents since Russian Federation intervened in 2015.
