In a major development, Careem, the popular ride-hailing service operating in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, and Pakistan, through a security announcement has reported a cybersecurity breach targeting its customers and captain's data.

According to the firm, the names, email addresses, phone numbers and trip data were stolen, though there was no evidence that passwords or credit card information - held on external third-party servers - were compromised, it said.

However, the online cab service did advise its users to review their bank account and credit card statements for suspicious activity.

There was "no evidence" that customer passwords and credit card numbers have been stolen, the company said.

According to Gemma McKeown, a representative from Careem's global press team, at the time of the attack on Jan 14, Careem had 14m customers and 558,000 captains on its platform across 13 countries, including Pakistan. The company also advised to remove important information like credit card information from their accounts.

The company apologised for the breach, saying: "We take the protection of our customers and captains' data very seriously". We are also working with law enforcement agencies.
