Chemical Weapons Watchdog To Investigate Alleged Syria Attack

Mr. Trump's early morning comments were remarkable in that he is, in some way, telegraphing the United States' response to a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria, which is something he had previously criticized other leaders for doing.

President Donald Trump pledged on Monday that the incident would "be met forcefully", adding that the United States had several military options and a decision on a response would be taken "shortly".

But the UN Security Council failure to agree a global response to the incident, after Washington and Moscow opposed each other's rival motions to set up an worldwide investigation into the use of chemical weapon in Syria, has stalled the possibility of a strike.

Russian Federation has since aggressively threatened the United States if it were to fire any missiles at Syria in response to the chemical gas attacks.

A source from a pro-regime unit told AFP on Tuesday there were "precautionary measures being taken by the Syrian army, especially the airports and military bases".

What might a military strike look like?

Trump has been weighing his course of action in Syria following the suspected chemical attack, which he described as "sick" over the weekend.

However, the army has repeatedly claimed the Rohingya men were "terrorists", but has not presented any evidence to back up the allegation.

The attack that killed dozens last weekend in Douma, one of the last pockets of rebels against the Bashar Assad regime, has been condemned worldwide by countries such as the USA, though his supporters including Russian Federation have said there is no evidence that such an attack even occurred.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement Tuesday that Trump will not attend the 8th Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru or travel to Bogota, Colombia as planned.

"We don't really want to defeat Assad militarily", said Michael O'Hanlon, an analyst at the Brookings Institution, a non-profit public policy think tank in Washington.

The World Health Organization reported Wednesday that 500 Syrian patients treated after Saturday's attack on the city of Douma showed signs of suffering from a toxic chemical attack.

President Donald Trump and Western allies are considering further involvement in Syria after Syria's President Bashar Assad was accused of perpetrating a chemical attack Saturday. Many diplomats viewed the offer as a gambit to fend off a military strike, at least for the time being.

The Russian military hinder the flight of the drones the USA air force over close to the Syrian territories.

The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote on two contrasting draft resolutions proposed by the USA and Russian Federation on the suspected attack.

US, Russia clash at UNSC over probing chemical attacks in Syria
USA officials have consulted with global allies on a possible joint military response to Syria's alleged poison gas attack . Both countries traded blocking attempts to set up global investigations into a possible chemical weapons attacks in Syria .

In order to verify those allegations, Damascus is ready to facilitate the arrival to its territory of an investigation mission from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to the place of the alleged incident in Douma.

"We're making decisions as to what we do with respect to the awful attack", Trump said Monday.

Swedish Ambassador Olof Skoog called Russia's veto a "tragic déjà vu". It was not immediately clear whether that visit might affect any USA or allied military action.

"Russia contended it could not support the United States proposal because it believed that it would lead to bias, and that it was aimed at undercutting what Moscow says is the democratically elected Syrian government", said Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from the UN headquarters in NY. This is why Obama - smartly - spent 8 years avoiding confrontation with Russian Federation, including in Syria. Who are you covering up for?

For passing a resolution needs nine votes in favour and no vetoe from any of the five permanent members: Russia, China, France, Britain or the US. Russian Federation has repeatedly vetoed resolutions to protect the Assad government.

Now this latest attack seems to have put those USA plans on hold.

Trump and May also agreed "not to allow the use of chemical weapons to continue", according to the statement. Based in The Hague in the Netherlands, the group is independent but often collaborates with the United Nations.
