Group gathers on 'Equal Pay Day' to urge equality for women

System C gender pay gap reveals on average women are paid more

"The majority of our 34 per cent staff who work part-time are female and when this is taken into account it means that men, on average, are paid 7.75 per cent more than women".

April 10 was selected for Equal Pay Day because it symbolizes how far into the year women in the United States must continue to work, to earn what men earned in the previous year. "We are demanding equal pay and we are demanding it now", James said.

One source of the especially polarising opinions that revolve around the gender pay gap is that it has become so heavily politicised. In other words, when comparing mean hourly rates, women earn approximately 84p for every £1 that men earn.

"Our current gender pay gap numbers make starkly clear the need for us to accelerate the pace of change within our company". One glance at the #MeToo campaign or the countless claims of sexual harassment at work quickly dispels that idea. There are many potential reasons for this, from a greater need for women to avoid failure to seem "good enough" as an employee, to a long-standing discipline and rule-following culture in females.

The response to that plan was highly negative, the Interior Department told The Washington Post earlier this month. Last year, nearly 330.9 million people visited the 379 park service sites that reported attendance figures.

However, the study's main focus highlighted an overall lack of women in senior roles, with women accounting for less than 50 per cent of senior positions in every nation. According to the Government-backed Hampton-Alexander review, the lowest ranked FTSE 100 companies for the employment of women in board and leadership positions include the London Stock Exchange and Prudential as well as Barclays PLC and BP, who had an all-male executive committee at the time of publication.

Apple revealed when filing its figures that 71pc of its top-earning employees were male and that men were paid more across the three subsidiaries it was required to report on, including Apple UK. In contrast, the gender pay gap for architects is just 4.4 per cent and for chartered surveyors it is eight per cent.

There may still be a lot of work to do to in achieving equal pay for women, however Riggins suggests ways in which everyone can help the cause through self-reflection.

So why do women earn less than men? Not only does the gap exists, but research points to a complicated mix of bias and occupational choices that create a pervasive cycle of lower earnings for women. Even when women do complete degrees, however, the problem persists - graduates can expect to earn nearly 23pc less than their male counterparts.
