Hawkins hospitalised after collapsing in final stages of marathon

Portia Woodan breaks away

While leading the men's marathon, Hawkins began to struggle in the scorching heat on the Gold Coast. Several hundred metres - and over two minutes later - Hawkins collapsed on a bridge just past the 40km mark.

Team Scotland issued a statement shortly after the race - which was eventually won by Australian Michael Shelley - saying Hawkins was recovering well and wouldn't face any long-term health side-effects.

Scotland team officials said Hawkins was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance for testing, "and there are no major concerns at this stage". We are offering every assistance possible to Callum and Team Scotland. "He is current course of extra assessments as a precaution and all of us need him a speedy restoration".

Hawkins, who had about a two-minute lead over Shelley, first became disoriented at about the 38-kilometer mark of the 42.2-kilometer-long race, briefly holding himself up next to a race barrier to try to regain his balance.

Hawkins was taken to hospital where he was able to sit... I had a couple of mates around Main Beach who said Callum was in a bit of trouble.

"He hit his head on the barrier", said Cram.

"I just tried to run a smart race and come through and in the end I managed to do it, but it was really tough".

People watching the race on TV took to social media to express their outrage at the time it took to get medical attention to the Scot, reserving particular ire for those spectators taking photos of Hawkins.

This is a guy in real distress and someone needs to recognise it.

"Where on earth is the help?"

Hawkins' team-mate Robbie Simpson had been working his way through the field and he punched the air as he crossed the finish line, his time of 2:19:36 securing the bronze ahead of Northern Ireland's Kevin Seaward with a time of 2:19:54. The marshalls are there, they've got radios. "I think it's disgraceful".

"If you want it, you have to work for it", said the victor, who also secured 1500m silver on the Gold Coast. "They told me to keep going and gave me encouragement".

Mr Peters said he was concerned about the reaction to the struggling athlete.

He also said he did not think the heat - the temperature was about 28C - was a problem.

It was the second heartbreaking collapse of the men's marathon, after a Namibian athlete was forced to pull out earlier in the event.

Organisers said there are strict rules that can see athletes disqualified for seeking medical help.

"I was also concerned about the behaviour of a small number of bystanders who chose to take images", he said. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of GC2018". I'm glad to be finished to be honest. "I just tried to hang on". "I thought hopefully I can get to the finish line because I was starting to get cramps in my hands".
