James Comey claims Donald Trump is "morally unfit to be president"

Trump renews blasting Comey 'lies' amid interview, book release

RT has picked 5 most interesting scoops.

"Truth matters, integrity matters", Mr Comey said.

Comey's bombshell interview was aired days before the release of his book "A Higher Loyalty". Here are some of the more interesting points.

It raises the possibility that the Russians had filmed Trump and could use the recording to blackmail him.

Comey details his conversations with Trump about the allegations in the dossier involving prostitutes in Moscow and explains his baffled train-of thought when he says Trump expressed concerned about "a one-percent chance that [Melania] believes this is true".

Lacking evidence of actual wrongdoing-in last night's interview, Comey yet again refused to accuse President Trump of obstruction-Comey turned instead to the petty and political.

"It always struck me and still strikes me as unlikely, and I would have been able to say with high confidence about any other president I dealt with, but I can't. The lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organisation above morality and above the truth", Comey said. Most mainstream U.S. media chose to latch onto the "it's possible" part, though. Many believe his reopening of the FBI's inquiry into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as Secretary of State barely a week before the election, while making no mention of the active inquiry into Mr Trump and Russian Federation, swung the election to Mr Trump. I don't remember consciously thinking about that, but it must have been.

Asked whether Trump was unfit to be president and should be impeached, Comey said people need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values. Comey also defended his decision to publicly disclose the FBI's re-opening of its investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's handling of email when she was secretary of state.

Stephanopoulos asked him whether Mr Trump is fit to be President of the United States. Clinton herself pointed a finger at Comey, writing in her book that if it were not for his "dramatic intervention", she would have grabbed the White House. I hope we had no impact.

"He.says he may want me to investigate it to prove that it didn't happen".

Comey said he didn't believe the allegation, but feared that if it ever came out, it would destroy the credibility of the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Under the optimistic assumption that the attorney general had any control over President Trump, I then took the opportunity to implore him to prevent any future one-on-one communications between the president and me".

He said Sessions responded by not meeting his gaze, darting his eyes around, and letting Comey know he was on his own.

What is clear after Comey's sit-down with George Stephanopoulos is that the former top cop's disdain for Trump is rooted in something more visceral than suspicion of a crime or a low IQ.

In October a year ago, it was revealed that the dossier had been funded by Fusion GPS, led by Glenn Simpson.

Trump's firing of Comey set off a scramble at the Justice Department that led to the appointment of Mueller as special counsel overseeing the Russian Federation investigation. Comey predictably did not hold back either when speaking about his former boss on ABC.

Put simply, Comey thinks Trump is a bad person. "He asked for my loyalty personally as the F.B.I. director". It's the family, the family, the family, the family.

Comey offered a blunt assessment of a conversation with Trump on February 14, 2017, during which Comey maintains the president said of an investigation the FBI was conducting into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, "I hope you can let it go".
