Kendrick Lamar wins a Pulitzer Prize

PACKSHOTDamn came out in 2017

The Compton man won the Pulitzer Prize for Music - an award usually reserved for classical and jazz artists and first founded in 1943 - for his work on latest album 'DAMN'. The prize in that category has so far only been given to classical or jazz musicians.

The Pulitzer board said the album was a virtuosic song collection that captured the modern African American life. The rapper has so far not won the most prestigious award in music, the Grammy for "Album of the Year" which he lost to Bruno Mars this year.

In April a year ago the Pulitzer prize was awarded to a team of American newspaper New York Times. Lamar's fourth LP, was his third straight to be nominated but ultimately fall short of the trophy, considered by most to be the top prize in popular music. Late previous year, Lamar released a "collector's edition" of DAMN. with the original album's tracklist reversed - played back-to-front it revealed even more of the album's shifting, contrasting revelations of self.

Here is another proof that Kendrick Lamar is one of the most important voices in his generation of rappers: He just won a Pulitzer. The New York Times also shared the honour for national reporting with The Washington Post for their coverage of the investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

In announcing the journalism prizes, Pulitzer administrator Dana Canedy said the winners "uphold the highest goal of a free and independent press, even in the most trying of times".
