LHC bans Ex PM's contemptuous speeches, CJP takes sou motu notice

Hussian and Hassan Nawaz are UK-based and have been absconding since the proceedings began a year ago, however, the former premier has been showing up regularly before the court of judge Muhammad Bashir.

Earlier today, the apex court had issued notices to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and also sought the record of the LHC order after taking notice of the news reports.

The Accountability Court -I accepted one day exemption plea of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz as the flight could not take off from Lahore due to inclement weather on Monday.

"Where does it say that a ban has been placed on their speeches?"

The petitioner said PEMRA did not block these hateful and ridiculing remarks passed against the judiciary.

The court then ordered PEMRA to take action on the complaints against PML-N leaders in 15 days, as stated in the LHC order, and wrapped up the suo motu proceedings. She said in Pakistan vote bank belonged to PML-N.

A petitioner, Amina Malik, told the court that Sharif, his daughter Maryam, son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, Interior Minister Talal Chaudhry and Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah verbally attacked the Supreme Court judges in a rally in Jaranwala (some 150-km from Lahore) for disqualifying Sharif from the office of prime minister.

The larger bench, headed by Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi, gave this verdict on petitions seeking initiation of contempt cases against former premier Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and other PML-N leaders for criticizing the judiciary.

Sharif, 68, is facing three corruption cases linked to the Panama Papers case in an anti-graft court.

The PML-N leader said the people didn't have freedom of speech, should they be made deaf and dumb?
