Mark Zuckerberg on Capitol Hill Monday to meet with lawmakers

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg began the two-day testimony before the U.S. congressional senate committee with another public apology Tuesday.

During his appearance before US Congress's Energy and Commerce Committee on April 11, Mark fielded tough questions from senators at Capitol Hill with 44 senators in attendance.

In what appeared to be a rehearsed sound bite, Zuckerberg discussed the humble beginnings of his company a few times over the course of the hearing, mentioning specifically that the company started in his dorm room at Harvard.

Mr Zuckerberg answered: "Senator, no, I would probably not choose to share that here". And he said "yes" again when asked if anyone at Facebook had been interviewed - though Zuckerberg said he personally had not talked to Mueller's team.

How to watch Zuckerberg's hearings?

Zuckerberg confirmed that his company is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. "It was my mistake, and I'm sorry", Mark said.

But Facebook made clear to users at the time that app developers could get data on them if their friends installed an app, Zuckerberg said.

"Sometimes we move too fast", he said in 2010 after reporters found that a loophole in Facebook allowed advertisers to access privacy data even if users didn't want them to do so.

Believing that both the guilty parties had erased the data, Facebook decided not to inform the users, as it was a closed chapter.

Questions about Facebook's mobile data collection practices aren't anything new, however.

In the hearings, Zuckerberg is trying to both restore public trust in his company and stave off federal regulations that some lawmakers have floated.

He took responsibility for failing to prevent Cambridge Analytica, which was affiliated with Donald Trump's presidential campaign, from gathering personal information from 87 million users.

Yesterday, Facebook announced that users of the social media platform will finally be notified whether or not their personal data was shared with the controversy-embroiled political research firm Cambridge Analytica.

"Whether is was ads placed on Facebook - potentially from foreign countries, what's going to be put in place for the midterm elections to make sure we have gotten to the bottom of this and are taking corrective actions", said Baldwin.

"One of my greatest regrets in running the company is that we were slow in identifying the Russian information operations in 2016", Zuckerberg said.
