Michael Cohen drops libel lawsuit against BuzzFeed over Russia Dossier

Cohen has denied parts of the dossier, a 35-page document compiled by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele, in which he is mentioned, particularly details about his wife and her father and claims that Cohen had traveled to Prague. And Fusion GPS said it wasn't surprised that Cohen withdrew his "meritless complaint". Fusion and BuzzFeed are facing other defamation lawsuits over the dossier, which remains largely unverified.

This comes after a recent McClatchy report that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office has information that Cohen was in Prague during the summer of 2016. Cohen has not responded to that report.

A recent report from McClatchy said that Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 US election, has found evidence that Cohen did travel to Prague.

However, the president and members of his administration have long denied these claims, repeating time and time again that there was "no collusion" between the two entities.

Cohen had filed suits against the news outlet and political research firm over the publication of the so-called "Trump dossier", which detailed what former FBI Director James Comey described as "salacious and unverified" allegations about Trump ties to Russian Federation.

Cohen is now dealing with other legal issues.

Cohen's attorney, David Schwartz, told iMediaEthics by e-mail, "The decision to voluntarily discontinue these cases was a hard one. But given the events that have unfolded, and the time, attention, and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed the matters, despite their merits".

A spokesman for BuzzFeed touted Cohen's decision to drop the lawsuit.

Pursuing it, the firm said, would require Cohen to "face a discovery process that would have forced him to defend his reputation and address the allegations of the Steele dossier under penalty of perjury". "If there's one thing Democrats and Republicans agree on today, it's that the dossier was an important part of the government's investigation into potential collusion between the Trump Campaign and Russian Federation", the outlet said. "We strongly believed that publishing the disputed document whose existence we and others were reporting was in the public interest".
