No border solution, no Brexit deal, United Kingdom is told

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and German foreign minister Heiko Maas face members of the media during a press briefing at Iveagh House Dublin on Thursday

Lib Dem Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said it showed "the only solution was always going to be a hard border or the customs union". In the specific case of Northern Ireland, it would have allowed traders to operate across the border without any checks. That would go a long way to solve the Irish border issue and would also please businesses that are keen on keeping cross-border trade easy.

The Commission's proposal would effectively cut Northern Ireland off from mainland Britain and May has said no British prime minister could accept that.

William Taylor FFA co-ordinator stated: "One politician summed the situation up incredibly well after the referendum, as follows; the overall United Kingdom result was a shame because everyone in Northern Ireland had got to a point where they were comfortable in their skin, in that they could have a United Kingdom passport or an Irish passport or both and they could come and go north, south, east or west across these islands at will".

The importance of the Irish border issue for the whole Brexit deal was reiterated by EU Council President Donald Tusk this week. "That commitment was set out in December's joint report, which also includes our guarantee of avoiding a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland". The easiest way to accomplish that would be to keep Northern Ireland in the EU customs unions, however, this is unacceptable to hardline unionists in Theresa May's government.

The UK and EU want to get the Brexit treaty, including the Irish border solution backstop, finalised by October to give the British and European parliaments time to approve it before Britain leaves the bloc at the end of March 2019. "In parallel, we will start our first talks about the future EU-U.K. relationship".
