Paul Ryan announces he will not seek re-election

Richard Boyd Barrett: 'Anybody with any sense would condemn' Syria airstrikes

Most notably, before Ryan became House Speaker, one of his "conditions" for taking the job was getting weekends off to spend with his family, according to HuffPost.

Which is why it's so puzzling that the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, abruptly announced that he will not be running for re-election and will willingly forfeit his position as the highest-ranking member of the House.

"I have given this job everything I have, and I have no regrets whatsoever for having accepted this responsibility", Ryan told reporters.

"The speaker and the chief of staff both talked like they had left office", said one donor who attended the event, speaking anonymously because the proceedings were private.

"But the truth is, [the job] takes over ... and the truth is, there are other things in life that are fleeting, being a father to young children", he said. I just can't let that happen. "If I were Paul Ryan, I'd go and do something else for a while".

King also pressed Ryan about his relationship with Trump, with the speaker insisting that he and Trump worked well together, despite disagreeing on some issues.

"But I have given this job everything. He now leaves the Republican party here in Washington - because, really, he's a major leader here in that party - a bit rudderless as it prepares for a tough reelection battle in 2018".

In late March, Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) told a reporter that rumors had been swirling around the Capitol that Ryan would soon step down and be replaced by Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). Both men spoke at the closed-door meeting Wednesday, delivering tributes to Ryan.

The Speaker is the 45th House Republican to announce he won't seek re-election this year, and within a few hours another joined him. "It's a very partisan environment and I think that problem has been exacerbated under President Trump". "Not in fact, but probably in practicality".

Ryan's plans have been the source of much speculation and will set off a scramble among his lieutenants to take the helm.

The speaker is by far the most prominent figure fleeing Congress in a long season of Republican retirements.

They had conversations about criminal justice reform and ways to make poverty temporary instead of just tolerable.

Ryan was pulled into the leadership job by the sudden retirement in 2015 of Speaker John Boehner, who had struggled to control the chamber's restless conservative wing.

Ryan's brand of politics, an uplifting fiscal conservatism rooted in his admiration of his former boss, Jack Kemp, seemed ascendant as recently as 2012, when Mitt Romney chose to add him to the presidential ticket. Ryan was notable not for any particular idea but for being a straight-down-the-line reliable orthodox conservative Republican, which is to say, a Bush-Hastert Republican without the sex scandals and over-investment in foreign policy. "We are with you Paul!" tweeted the president on Wednesday.

In a brief statement, Pelosi didn't cite any specific issues she wants to tackle with the Republican she has opposed on almost every issue. She says Ryan's career is a point of pride for her school. And she commends him for his "steadfast commitment to our country".

While many candidates will likely emerge in the coming months, the biggest name now eyeing Ryan's seat is Paul Nehlen-a fringe political contender previously supported by Breitbart who openly endorses white supremacy. Vos did not immediately return telephone or text messages. Another Republican mentioned as a potential candidate is longtime Ryan family friend and backer Bryan Steil, an attorney and member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.
