Prof behind Cambridge Analytica's Facebook data mining says he's sorry

Cambridge Analytica said the raw data they received was deleted after Facebook reached out to them, CNET reported.

"The belief in Silicon Valley and certainly our belief at that point was that the general public must be aware that their data is being sold and shared and used to advertise to them", Kogan said in an interview with "60 Minutes" Sunday.

Facebook has been mired in scandal since revelations that the data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica misused personal information from as many as 87 million Facebook accounts.

Kogan was hired on a contract by Cambridge Analytica in June 2014 - the same month the company was founded - and harvested the data throughout the summer by asking Facebook users to take a lengthy personality questionnaire. Kogan is the developer behind the controversial "thisisyourdigitallife" app that collected certain information-location, gender, interests, etc. -about users and their friends.

Kogan is expected to be questioned on Tuesday by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee's inquiry into fake news.

Cambridge Analytica is blamed by Facebook for acquiring the vast amount of personal data that was then used in campaign research during the United States presidential election.

"At the time, we didn't think we were doing anything wrong", he said.

The relationship between Facebook and Cambridge Analytica appears to have been closer than expected. I think that core idea that we had that everybody knows and nobody cares was fundamentally flawed. Facebook has said it allowed this kind of data collection to help developers improve the "in-app" experience for users.

Flight records dispute Trump's claim he didn't stay in Russian Federation
In 2013, he cemented an alliance with father and singer son Aras and Emin Agalarov, who hosted the pageant in Moscow. On Sunday evening, Trump tweeted that he'd "just got back from Russian Federation ".

"I think that it's really concerning that.the head psychologist that we were using, Aleksandr Kogan, was working on a Russian funded project in Russia on psychological profiling of people", Wylie said. The social network now employs the former co-director of the data firm, Joseph Chancellor, who Kogan says he worked with extensively. The company said it did not use Kogan's data in its political consulting work for Sen. "This was the blindness we had back then". "And I'm talking about some of the biggest companies in the world, and Facebook does nothing to police this", he said.

So our promise is this: we do not tell advertisers who you are or sell your information to anyone. "In hindsight, we should have followed up to confirm he had deleted the information, as well as notified the people impacted-both of which are now happening". No internet company in its right mind would sell the actual data of one of its users. Conglomerates will have to strive to control their privacy and security settings and protect their users from any unwanted, intrusive third parties.

Even though Google is now safe from the high level of scrutiny that Facebook is facing, the company should take part in the conversation about the ethics of managing and maintaining private user information. Furthermore, Facebook's real goal, as a for-profit publicly traded company is to make money not give you access to digital content or help you make connections.
