Russian Federation says West only interested in overthrowing Syria's Assad

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Matt and other military leaders had warned that the larger the attack, the greater the risk of a confrontation with Russian Federation, two U.S. officials said.

"Tonight, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States took decisive action to strike the Syrian chemical weapons infrastructure..." Moscow warned against any strikes and threatened to retaliate.

In his televised address, Trump said, "The objective of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons".

The allies reportedly had conclusive evidence that Syria used chemical weapons on its own people.

"The sanctions are likely to have a profound effect on the designated companies, which would be unable to transact in United States dollars - the standard denomination currency in commodities trading and the main currency in counterparty transactions in global trading", Fitch said.

Last month Britain blamed Russian Federation for a nerve agent attack on an ex-spy and his daughter, accusations Russian Federation has vehemently denied.

As Trump has talked about ordering a new military strike on Syria, the regime led by President Bashar Assad has been busy.

"Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path, or if it will join with civilized nations as a force for stability and peace". The Kremlin readout said that Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe". "It is due to arrive in Damascus on April 14", TASS news agency quoted Lavrov as saying. Putin, in his condemnation Saturday of the airstrikes, called for an emergency U.N. Security Council session and described the assault as the latest in two decades of American-led interventions that, in the Kremlin's telling, have unwound the worldwide order.

At stake in Syria is the potential for confrontation, if not outright conflict, between the US and Russian Federation, former Cold War foes whose relations have deteriorated in recent years over Moscow's intervention in Ukraine, its interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and, most recently, its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members Germany and the Netherlands have said they will not take part in any military action.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia insisted that there was "no credible confirmation of toxic substance use in Douma", adding that "we have information to believe that what took place is a provocation with the participation of certain countries' intelligence services".

Fitch revised Russia's sovereign rating outlook to positive from stable in September and said the rating itself would be one notch higher than its current BBB- level if not the USA sanctions.

The allied operation comes a year after a US missile strike that Trump said was meant to deter Assad from further use of chemical weapons. Moscow alleged quickly after Saturday's suspected attack that the images of the victims in Douma are fake.

Russian Federation had earlier accused Britain of faking a suspected chlorine gas attack reported to have killed dozens of civilians in the besieged Syrian enclave of eastern Ghouta.

The strike is suspected to be a chemical attack, but the Syrian government denied the allegations saying it was fabricated by the rebels who were in a state of decline.

The warning from Moscow came as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that increasing tensions over Syria could lead to "full-blown military escalation". "I hope no one would dare to launch such an adventure now", Lavrov said.

Mr Lavrov noted that Russian and USA militaries had a hotline to prevent incidents, adding that it was not clear if it would be sufficient amid mounting tensions.

Fears of confrontation between Russian Federation, the Syrian state's key ally, and the West ran high after Mr Trump said missiles "will be coming" and lambasted Moscow for standing by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A US -led coalition has been conducting airstrikes in Syria since September 2014 as part of a largely successful effort to break the IS grip on both Syria and Iraq. Around 30 missiles were fired in the attack, and a third of them were shot down, the official said.

It said the attack was a flagrant violation of worldwide rules and regulations and ignores Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Confirmation of the fact-finding team's trip comes after Russian Federation said Douma had finally come under the government's total control, after the last rebel group that had been fighting Syria's regime there capitulated. The government, however, said evacuations from Douma were ongoing and no Syrian government forces had entered the town.
