San Diego County Board Votes to Support Trump's Sanctuary State Lawsuit

State & Local
Tipping Point? Resistance Growing to California’s Dangerous Sanctuary Policies

Our Board of Supervisors' decision to align with the Trump lawsuit against the State of California is troubling for many reasons: It disregards our shared values and common destiny as Californians; it ignores the recommendations of law enforcement experts, including Sheriff Bill Gore and former San Diego Police Chief David Bejarano, who know our region is safer when there's trust between immigrants and local authorities; it ignores a whole host of unknown implications that would result from our state's resources being subjected to federal appropriation; and it circumvents our reasonable expectation of county government transparency and public accountability.

The board voted in closed session after 45 minutes of public comment in which most speakers in the packed chambers urged the supervisors to vote against supporting the lawsuit.

Here's a breakdown of how San Diego and Orange Counties are showing support for the president's crackdown on immigration policies.

Gaspar held up a stack of printed emails and letters more than a foot high that she said the board had received from residents who wanted the county to stand up against the state policy.

Edgar met with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials over the course of the last week, promising them access to California cities in Orange County that identify as sanctuary cities, like Santa Ana and Anaheim.

Earlier in the day, Amit Shah visited the homes of noted litterateur Chidananda Murthy and dalit writer Siddalingaiah. He said he wished to state "some truths" that Rahul Gandhi had mentioned about it on December 16 2010 before the U.S.

Margaret Baker, who lives near the border, told the board that backing the lawsuit would discourage immigrants from reporting crime. The stack of emails criticizing her for considering supporting the lawsuit was not much thicker than a legal pad. "It's also about law enforcement, and making clear to our folks in our city that we support the USA constitution and with federal immigration officials making sure to keep our community safe and our country safe".

California Gov. Jerry Brown said Tuesday that opponents like to overstate the law's restrictions.

The Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to direct staff to investigate ways to promote the construction of homes for low- and middle-income families in unincorporated San Diego County.

"The sanctuary state law is not only unconstitutional, but it is a real threat to public safety because it forces local government to harbor and shield violent criminals", said DeMaio, a former San Diego City councilman.

After a heated meeting, the Escondido City Council voted 4-1 in April to support the Justice Department's lawsuit with a legal brief.

MP Promotions' first global fight card of also features Cebuano Jhack Tepora's challenge against Mexican Edivaldo "Indio" Ortega for the world featherweight title.

State Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, said the state's recent immigration policies were carefully crafted to abide by the Constitution.

Is a "revolution" afoot in California? The fact of the matter is, when state and local law enforcement agencies outright refuse to share information to federal officials regarding criminal activity, our communities are unsafe and the rule of law is undermined. He said nothing prevents local officials from notifying federal immigration officials that suspects are about to be released.

Many accused Gaspar of bringing the issue to a county vote to gain media attention for her campaign to take the Congressional seat of Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista. Supervisor Greg Cox, whose district covers the South Bay, voted against it. Supervisor Ron Roberts, who represents central San Diego, was traveling overseas and did not attend the meeting.

Supervisor Horn, who represents a more conservative part of the county, cast the deciding vote in favor of the lawsuit after keeping mum on the issue for several weeks.

Cox said immigration issues need to be solved in Washington.
