US, Russia clash at UNSC over probing chemical attacks in Syria

USA officials have consulted with global allies on a possible joint military response to Syria's alleged poison gas attack.

Macron said in February "France will strike" in the event of lethal chemical weapon attack on civilians by government forces in Syria.

That official was not authorized to speak publicly and commented only on condition of anonymity.

Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by telephone to coordinate their response, seeking a "strong reaction" from the worldwide community, Macron's office said.

Israel rarely acknowledges carrying out strikes, but has admitted attacking targets in Syria dozens of times since 2012.

Russia's claim came hours after the Pentagon denied Syrian media reports that the US conducted the airstrikes in Syria in retaliation for Saturday's suspected chemical attack on civilians that left dozens dead. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'", Trumpwrote in a post on Twitter. "You shouldn't be partners with a 'Gas Killing Animal" who kills his people and enjoys it!"

Sanders indicated to reporters that missile strikes were not his only option.

Increasingly hostile Russian actions pose a threat on a number of fronts, including cyber espionage, she said. "Now we're announcing what we're going to do and unfortunately it puts us in a place where possibly it creates a greater conflict".

Ben Simmons Arrogantly Guarantees He's The ROY
Their 50th victory of the season clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Speaking with ESPN in downtown Philadelphia over the weekend, Simmons spoke about the Rookie of the Year Award.

"We would call upon them to do that but I think a military response is appropriate".

The Syrian state broadcaster said there were several dead and wounded in the strike.

Two days later, Trump ordered an attack on the Syrian military base from which the chemical weapons were believed to have been launched.

USA government sources said Washington's assessment of the Saturday attack was that chemical weapons were used.

Both leaders condemned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for his "disregard for human life", Xinhua cited the White House statement as saying.

"And we are clear that those responsible should be held to account".

"We are working urgently with our allies to assess what has happened but we are also working with our allies on any action that is necessary". Both countries traded blocking attempts to set up global investigations into a possible chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

France also appears poised to play a leading role.

Trump promises 'forceful' response over chemical weapons attack in Syria
Britain is considering military action against the Syrian government after a poison gas attack killed dozens, including children . Macron and Trump had again reiterated their desire for a "strong reaction" from the worldwide community, Macron's office said.

David Cameron lost a historic Commons vote in 2013 over launching airstrikes on the Assad regime to deter its use of chemical weapons, damaging his credibility.

While Trump has made clear he believes the Syrian regime is responsible for the attack, observers have struggled to gain access to the scene and neither the United States nor its allies have been able to provide firm evidence of culpability.

Haley dismissed the Russian draft as "all about protecting the Assad regime" because of provisions that would have required the Security Council to endorse its findings - in other words, giving Russia a veto over any attempt to apportion blame.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday that the United States and eight other countries called for an emergency meeting Monday of the U.N. Security Council to discuss the situation. But Iran has long supported Assad, and Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported that "some Iranian military advisers" had been killed in the missile strikes.

The US State Department said on Monday that the Douma victims' symptoms were consistent with those caused by a nerve agent but they could not confirm what had been used. Trump wrote in a post on Twitter.

Russia's Foreign Ministry responded by saying "smart" missiles would destroy evidence of a chemical attack.
