West to study options if Syria again uses chemical weapons: Boris

Mattis Assad didn't get the message last year

The barrage of 105 missiles that rained down on western Syria early Saturday morning meant to deter Syrian President Bashar Assad from launching chemical weapons attacks on his own people, but the military operation raises fresh questions about what happens next.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said in a military context the president's declaration of "mission accomplished" refers only to the "task now in front of you" and the United States will continue to monitor Assad's use of chemical weapons and are prepared to respond with further action in the form of additional military action.

President Donald Trump is claiming victory after a US -led allied attack on Syria's chemical weapons program. "There won't be anything, or anyone, even close!"

The agencies quoted the lawmakers as saying Assad was in a "good mood" and had praised the Soviet-era air defense systems used by Syria to help to repel the Western attacks.

Haley continued her criticism of Russian Federation at the U.N. Security Council Saturday, noting "Russia's failure to live up to their worldwide commitments to remove all chemical weapons from Syria".

The attack killed over 40 people and wounded hundreds.

U.S. and United Kingdom warn of imminent Russian global cyber attack
Russian Federation also insists it is committed to let the UN-backed watchdog do its work in Syria , promising "not to interfere". Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a conference call that London and Washington had not presented any evidence.

The strikes were the biggest foreign military action so far against Syria's regime.

Trump said, (quote) "Russia must decide if it will continue down this dark path", slamming his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who said in 2013 that Moscow had guaranteed the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons.

Warning that the strikes will exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and provoke a new wave of refugees from the country and the region as a whole, Putin said the current escalation will have a devastating impact on the whole system of worldwide relations.

Long range tomahawk missiles were launched from a U.S Navy ship - striking two other chemical-related facilities early Saturday morning.

Haley warned that the United States was "locked and loaded" if any new chemical attack was carried out in Syria.

"They will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use", Haley said during an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation".

Inspectors from the OPCW chemical watchdog will begin their investigation Sunday at the site of an alleged chemical attack near Damascus, a senior official said.

U.S. Joint Staff Director Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said the three nations had deployed 105 weapons against Syrian targets and all the Western nations' aircraft safely returned to their bases at the end of the strike mission.

The team of experts are set to investigate the April 7 attack east of the capital Damascus, which Bashar al Assad's regime and its Russian ally deny ever took place. "I believe that we took the heart of it out with the attacks that we accomplished last night", he said.

"There is no proposal on the table for further attacks because so far, thank heavens, the Assad regime has not been so foolish as to launch another chemical weapons attack", he told BBC1's Andrew Marr Show.

Syria condemned the attack as a "flagrant violation of the global law", according to Syria's official SANA news agency.
